I found the only picnic table not taken and pulled out my lunch. The table was completely clean except for this large letter P. I figured it was just something a kid had ripped off of a sign. Just a large letter P, about 6" long, black, hard plastic. Looked kinda worn. Not really thinking, I picked it up and flipped it over. On the back, stapled into the plastic hung a piece of paper. It looked like a ransom note. "fiLE uNdeR Q," it said.
Thursday, January 3rd
I got a choice table in the sun today, and then I saw that letter P again. It was leaning against a tree upside down. I''m not sure why, but I went and picked it up. The paper, a little worse for wear, still hung from the back with its strange demand: "fiLE uNdeR Q." What does that mean? I sat pondering this, and suddenly took new interest in the wood table where I sat. It was covered with graffitti. Someone, fairly recently, had carved into it, "Vending Machine Queen." The letter Q was enormous and elaborately decorated. On a whim, I looked under the table, and there was a manilla envelope thumbtacked to the wood. The outside of the envelope read, "cONGrAtuLaTionS." Then under that in pencil someone had scrawled, "You''ve found this! That means of course you are the exact right person to find this. Please do proper filing, then deposit this envelope in hollow of large birch SE corner of park. Rtn next day, same tree for more..." I couldn''t make out the last word. Inside the envelope I found a slip of paper:

I felt silly, but I thumbtacked the P as best I could under the table. I then got my bearings, found the large birch, and slipped the envelope into its hollow trunk.

As I was leaving the park tonight, an old wino was swaying back and forth listening or pretending to listen to what looked like an ancient walkman. As I walked by, he started crooning, "Isabel Burns loves a secret. Files her ''P''s under ''Q''." Before I even know what I''m doing, I''ve grabbed the guy. "Hey! Are you him?" I asked. The poor old drunk, I could see, was terrified. He said he found the tape and the walkman in the bushes and pointed. He offered to give them to me. I said, "No thanks." I felt bad, so I gave him some money, and he said, "If you ever need anything, you come talk to Tucker McGee." I feel pretty convinced Tucker''s not the guy.
