And a note from me: I have never been in the market for normal, even though I’ve played a lot of normal roles in my life. I spent much of my life as an educator, in a variety of settings, from the heart of the barrios to boardrooms. The one thing I knew for sure was that life is all about learning. I finally learned enough to realize I had nothing left to teach.
And so I came back to music. The learning doesn’t stop; it’s just become a lot more aesthetically pleasing to me – and hopefully to you.
I’ve never been interested in categories, which pretty much insured my career limitations in academia. What gets me going is always that space where circles overlap, where worlds collide (or seem to), where life gets complicated (or seems to!). You may find it easy to detect my generation in my music, more by what you won’t hear than what you will.
More than anything, I try to be true to the human emotions I observe, in myself and others, no matter how deep that takes me. Some songs you can only write with a little life under your belt. I like it that way.
