Life for Texas singer/songwriter Floyd Tolston is a big history lesson taught through the stories of the people and places he has known. What sets him apart from many of today’s country artists, is that he has remained true to his country/folk roots. Tolston’s music is pure and unpretentious. His music brings to mind John Prine cast with shades of Tom T. Hall.
The Brownwood, Texas native began his musical career in college playing with local bands in the Stephenville, Texas area. After college, his active pursuit of music became secondary to a 35-year teaching and administration career. After retiring, he actively began completing and writing new songs, many of which appear on his debut record, “Something Special.”
“Something Special” is an ambitious work of vivid imagery, easily drawing the listener into the story. Uncluttered with cryptic metaphors and analogies, the songs are as entertaining as they are emotional. He has as much flair for writing quirky humor as he does for gut-wrenching torment.
The singer recently released his debut single, “Austin,” from “Something Special, an unsigned solo project.” The release of “Austin” follows the regional success of “Something Special.” The record’s track, “Everybody’s Got’em A Song” spent 19 weeks on the https://www.tradebit.com charts, peaking at number six. The song ranked number 21 on the station’s top 100 most-requested songs of 2007.
“The thing that I think makes most of my songs different from the other stuff you hear, even among Texas music circles, is that they generally tell a story,” Tolston says. “In order to know what is going on within the thought process of the song, people have to listen to the words. I think a lot of the songs reflect days of coffee houses when people listened to the words of the songs and identified with the contents.”
