Celestial Harp Live at the Music Gallery
This cd represents the first live performance of the Celestial Harp. The house was full. It was both exhilarating and frightening. The first piece, Affirmation, started with Robin alone on the Celestial harp, after a while he was joined by two opera singers singing sounds without words. It is a long work but Sharon Wiener’s voice takes your heart away! When joined with Peter Elliott in the finale portion of the piece we are left with feelings and no words.
The second piece, Light in the Rainforest, is just beautiful. Peter’s bird calls added wonderfully and one can easily imagine the light coming through the trees in the rainforest. Bull and Serpent, adds Kathy Armstrong’s rhythms. She had just returned from Africa with her big drums. Three are playing the harp and it is being slid and warped. Calling the Tortoise, with Brian on the saxophone is a jazzier work that really helps to accentuate the uniqueness of the Celestial harp. It helps to remember that other than the sax, all the sounds are coming from the harp. Triptych is a melodic piece with three playing on the harp.
Spirits of the Sand, with three on the harp is a haunting piece. Starting out with snake charming flutes, drums and three on the harp. When Peter’s voice comes in, the mood carries us into the desert.
Planet Scopes: Sept. 19, 1992, 8 to 10 pm, was the first time the Celestial harp had been played by six people at the same time. We were playing the horoscope of the very moment we were playing, which is why the title is what it is. What better name could there be?
Memoires d’Amour, with two on the harp and Kathy on Drums highlights Peter playing on the melodica! This is another romantically haunting piece. The textures from the harp being hammered and slid create a special presence. It all just comes together and captures your feelings.
Flying Dragon, with two on the Celestial Harp and Brian Roche on the Sitar. This piece is exquisite. The two instruments come together so nicely. It is often hard to tell which is the sitar and which is the harp. The long strings and vibrations of the sitar are balanced by the shorter strings of the celestial harp which resonate with their own warped qualities.

As a new instrument, the Celestial harp has impressively taken its place in the world of music. Who knows where it will go from here?
