Details:
You’ve always strained to make out the words. You know that when communication reaches it’s purest form – it most resembles music. Over the years, certain pieces have done more than simply laid a finger on your soul; they found ways to enter into you and speak as if from inside of you – through you. That magic feeling that comes when you discover a new tune you know will be returned to again and again – that is why these songs were written and recorded. Doug Sedgwick has always listened to find the aural worth in everything, and his songs were created to satisfy a craving for something organic in its presentation, intellectual in its execution, and emotional in its message. The visceral basis for these compositions is the usually unimaginable place where artists speak of becoming an instrument of a higher power. Does music described in such lofty terms have to be pretentious, complicated, overwrought or too dense to be enjoyed in a single sitting? No. It always starts with an acoustic guitar and a strong voice. And while a genuine affection for the blues shines through in many places, an appreciation for Jamaican rhythms, jazz improvisation, Celtic musings and well crafted song structures become apparent after four or five numbers have played. By the time the track (#10) called “Disappoint You” has been reached – it becomes apparent that the name by which the guitar employed is called is the only genre classification that could be hung on these stylistically diverse works: acoustic. Too lyrically well-crafted for standard blues; too emotionally invested for modern jazz; too untouched by electronic clutter to masquerade as rock; maybe too simplistic and straightforward in arrangements to be honest pop. Doug Sedgwick has chiseled the air into a sonic portrait of the shapes that make up his heart. Please listen and realize that he did this as he strives to understand you…
