The impetus for the Guru Yoga CD came from Penor Rinpoche in a talk saying something to the effect that one could use a CD release as a way to raise money for charitable endeavors. Doing live sound for his annual summer retreat, we heard the most amazing music from old Tibet and beyond, so, it seemed natural to try to record and preserve these sounds.
When it came to the actual recording, after a period of waiting we were told "Rinpoche will come to the temple in 30 minutes to record the CD". We scurried about setting up mics for monks and instruments and all kinds of stuff expecting the etherial Sun Ra chants and trance rhythms melded with enlightened free jazz we had heard. Instead, Rinpoche came with one attendant and Khenpo Tsewang Gyatso to translate. He sat, not on his seat but at the front of the stage. We threw the best mic we had (a Shure 58) right in front of him, dumped too much compression on the channel and hoped for the best. He chanted for 40 minutes, not the mystical melodies and rich vocal call and response we had heard but, his daily Guru Yoga practice. He chanted the practice uninterrupted, then added some additional mantras, then stopped and said, "now you put music to this"
The point we finally realized might be that Guru Yoga is the most valuable thing he has to offer. Most valuable, perhaps, because it can lead to the enlightenment in our own hands.
Many were expecting the cheesy New Age music that accompanies most Tibetan chanting for this project, but, who listens to that? With the goal being to save the world and enlighten all beings and, with Goa Trance was in its first big surge, it seemed logical to make trance music with real enlightenment potential. Look up who Penor Rinpoche is, we can''t begin to try to describe him here. Suffice it to say his voice can open chakaras big time. Trance to rearrange the fabric of time and end suffering. Ancient wisdom music for the future now over global grooves. So, we spent a year modeling the CD and got his approval. We spent a year finishing the CD, got his blessing and released it a week before 911 (who knew?).
We decided because of the deep spiritual content of the CD to not promote as usual but to give it away where appropriate. Now, we are in the second run and up on CD Baby where all profit goes to Penor Rinpoche and his charitable endeavors.
