MP3 Michael Himes - Forgetful Masterpiece

A fantastic worship-oriented pop rock experience from an undiscovered talent. With a voice like James Taylor, a gift for songwriting like Chris Rice, and an ear for "spot on" production, Michael has created a remarkably compelling debut CD.

13 MP3 Songs
SPIRITUAL: Contemporary Christian, SPIRITUAL: Praise & Worship

" . . . it''s like I''ve found the reason to make music . . . I finally feel like I''m home."

After years of studying and performing all kinds of music as a professional horn player, Michael Himes has finally discovered his voice.

"I can see now how the Lord has brought me to this point, everything was preparation for this. It''s crazy . . . I mean I had never sung before really. I was just too scared
before. But when God speaks- and you know the Lord is empowering you to step out, you do it. He doesn''t pull the rug out from under you when you''re being obedient."

Six years and hundreds of worship services later, Michael can see God''s hand in the "unexpected" call to lead worship.

" . . . they actually hired me to play guitar. And I was pretty nervous because I wasn''t really a guitar player you know. That was my second instrument- kind of a hobby . . .
oh, and I didn''t even have one at the time. A friend of mine bought me one! But I just prepared and prayed a lot! (laughs) I slowly realized that something special was
happening, like a birth maybe . . . I felt led to try things I had never done before. I offered to sing back ground vocals on a tune here and there. Then I arranged a few
songs. Then I finally stepped out and sang by myself for the first time. I remember it vividly. . . ''Heart of Worship'' by Matt Redman . . . I was petrified and kept bumping my lip into the microphone making a ''thud'' in the speakers. Very humbling! (laughs) . . . but you know, that''s how God will often use you. He brings you low to show you how much you need Him . . . how pointless it is to try and go it alone."

Those early "experiments" at the microphone of a worship service would come to shape and define not only Michael''s clear calling as a worship leader, but as an anointed songwriter.

"I said, ''Lord, if these songs never leave the basement than that would be fine with me'' and I meant it. It was hard to give that up because I really really wanted them to get out there, but I knew deep down that they would just be ''chaff'' if my heart wasn''t right- and many times it wasn''t. But he wanted my heart right before anything else would happen."

God''s timing- a principle every Christian must learn. Like many of us, Michael wanted everything to go smoothly and happen fast. But God often puts "seasons of waiting" in the lives of those he uses. It can be frustrating:

"I remember questioning all the time. I had this rock solid conviction of the purpose of God''s work in me- that it would happen- I just couldn''t see it happening. I guess it was
just too close and too slow . . . like trying to watch the earth rotate or something. Being "anxious for nothing" is not one of my spiritual gifts. (laughs) That''s really what the CD ended up being about- waiting, hoping, expecting, trusting- and all the not so great things that come in to try and steal those graces. I knew as a child of God that I was indeed a ''masterpiece''- a ''treasured possession'' made in his image- but I forgot that truth so often that I kind of made a joke of it- Forgetful Masterpiece- that''s me (laughs). . . and a lot of other Christians I think. That''s why I know the truth in these songs will resonate. Behind the art lies the universal backbone of Christian experience."

Indeed, the universal Christian experiences of grace, love, faith, hope, sin, repentance, service, giving, surrender, and joy form the fabric of Michael''s debut recording. Written, produced, and recorded by Michael, Forgetful Masterpiece is a worship album of staggering depth and beauty. From words that seem pulled right from the heart to light, smiling themes, Michael has discovered a powerful way to meld truth, melody, and word into songs that will move you, empower you and give you hope.

"My biggest hope with this project is that God will be glorified and that people will be moved toward a personal experience of his awesome power and grace . . . that''s
what every human being needs ultimately . . . an encounter with the Living God."

Michael, his wife Heather, with their two daughters recently stepped out in faith again by moving back home to Florida from the Washington D.C area where they have been living for the last 10 years. They now live in Orlando where he serves as worship pastor at Crossing''s Church in Lake Mary, FL. In addition to ministering at church, Michael is laying the groundwork for the next CD. "Yep . . . the songs keep on coming!"
