MP3 Jim Salinger - HEYOKA

This L.A. indie roots rocker possesses one hell of a voice. Dripping with sweet heartache & punk venom, Salinger thunders through the full spiritual spin cycle, from desperation all the way to redemption. Truly eclectic.

If you want to get back to the truth of our divided nation folks, you need to shut off The O''Reilly Factor AND The Daily Show. Just listen to your goddamn heart. That''s where Jim Salinger resides. And he''s crafted this diverse batch of songs to remind you, hell, you''ve been living there too. In the thunderous spirit of it''s Native American namesake, Salinger''s HEYOKA is a soulful contradiction that makes perfect sense. Imperfections and all.

Commerce be damned, this impressive independently-funded second release is, as Salinger jokes "a cathartic way to decimate my 401k." On The Faces-flavored "Like Lucifer", he plaintively sings "Demons come/Demons go/If I smile again/Then you''ll know/I''ve come back to you". Written through the bloodshot eyes of rock n'' roll underdog Roky Erickson, we come to see the devils Salinger''s been exorcising are both his, and our own.

In keeping with the contrarian theme, we find a burned out ex-smoker yearning to ask for a light on "Don''t Smoke Anymore". Wrapped in this Neil Young-style acoustic confessional the listener is forced to examine their own doubts and fears. In the phantasmagoric chamber pop of "All The Hearts In The Universe" a star-crossed soul is gently asked "How can you misconstrue/I love you?".

Whether they''re 60''s inspired garage rock rave-ups like "About That Kiss" or raw heart-on-your-sleeve weepers like "In The Street, In The Night" this album is chock-full of unexpected gems and haunting melodies. For all you Tecate swillin'' roots rockers out there, Salinger''s guitar positively rips on the chain smoking "Blinding Love".

After repeated listening, this cinematic collection reveals itself to be a mystical tale of redemption. Beyond the darkness and regret, we start to see a soft warm light slowly fill the horizon. Tension gives way to release. Hopelessness is finally "Awoken" with new found hope. Like one of those stormy nights that starts sleepless only to toss and turn itself into a glorious Technicolor dream, HEYOKA will stay with you for quite a spell.

Jim''s vocals and guitar duties were backed by an array of amazingly accomplished players from all around the L.A. underground (The Broken Remotes, Bolero, the Quincy Blaque trio) creating a sound that is truly organic and truly eclectic.
