BEAT IN TIME

Beat In Time is a creative side-project for Melbourne singer-songwriter - George Byrne. Produced by esteemed songwriter Toby Burke and recorded in the front room of his Nth Fitzroy homestead, Beat In Time is a lo-fi acoustic gem.

Artists note:

"Over a few freezing winter months in 2007, I recorded 9 songs in the front room of - friend and fellow musician - Toby Burke’s house in North Fitzroy, Melbourne.

The project was conceived fairly organically over a couple of drinks one evening. It was agreed that I would write and perform the songs and Toby would record, engineer and produce them (as long as I bought him a sandwich each day + a case of beer at the duration). I was really excited about the project from the outset because a) I had never really collaborated with anyone to this degree before and b) Being a big fan of Toby’s work I was fascinated to see what his unique sensibility would bring to the record.
So off we went, I tracked the songs and Toby worked his magic, & soon enough a record took shape.

Originally called ‘BLUE’ (until tragic Joni Mitchell fans I knew convinced me otherwise), Beat In Time is basically a collection of songs I had floating around that didn’t seem to be fitting in with other projects I was doing at the time. Detachment, transition, passion, impossible love, poor decision making, complete delusion, that raw youthful yearning…these are the themes that lie at the heart of it all. Investigating the beauty that can be found in apparently hopeless situations...or perhaps its just an ode to all the wonderfully dysfunctional relationships I had in my 20’s, either way, it is what it is: 9 quiet little songs with lots of reverb. So, put in on, have a hot bath, check out the full moon, cook a stew, light a candle, jump on a train, feel the magic in the night air. I hope you like it."

GEORGE BYRNE BIO

George Byrne is a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter. He released his first EP ‘Iron Skies’, in October 2006 and then spent 18 months playing around Sydney and touring nationally with artists such as The Church, Missy Higgins, Lior, Dan Brodie, Old Man River, Josh Pyke and Jen Cloher and many more. It was during this time that George wrote and recorded the songs for his critically acclaimed debut record ‘Foreign Water’.

Featuring guest appearances by Lior and Holly Throsby, and made with the help of respected producers Jonathan Burnside (The Sleepy Jackson) and Tim Powles (The Church), ‘Foreign Water’ (released in Australia and the UK in mid/late 2006), is an introspective and emotive look into the world in which we live.

Described as “A stunning debut of quietly beautiful songs” (Kathy McCabe, Daily Telegraph), ‘Foreign Water’ went on to receive excellent reviews across Europe (including No 1 – UK MOJO Playlist), and feature heavily on radio here and abroad. With trace elements of early Pink Floyd, Ryan Adams and Beck, ‘Foreign Water’ showcased George’s unique brand of loose flowing, country-tinged folk-rock to the world.

Following the release, George was selected as a showcasing artist for the 2007 SxSW Music Festival in Austin Texas & in January 2007 headed off to the UK to tour with Jason Molina (US), Lior, and The Redlands Palomino Company (UK) before flying to Austin in March where he played a run of shows (including his showcase), before returning back to Melbourne in April.

After a string of residencies within Melbourne throughout the middle of 2007, in September George was hand picked by Tori Amos to be the main support for the Australian leg of her current world tour. Following that George went straight on to play in Ben Lee’s band for his national ‘Ripe’ tour and most recently played two sold out shows with American singer songwriter Brandi Carlile, in Melbourne and Brisbane.

With debut record Foreign Water scheduled for release in the US in mid 2008, George is working towards a run of international dates, while writing songs for his next studio record ‘Hoops and Ladders’.
