· Has performed on famous stages for many famous people including Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, Apollo Theater, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, The Kennedy''s, many others

Charlotte Doreen Small
More

By: Kate Stephenson — 5/16/2008

Charlotte Doreen Small gives us “More”

Charlotte Doreen Small’s debut album More is an eclectic mix of gospel, jazz, r&b and Latin rhythms. Her sultry, powerful voice is reminiscent of classic divas—Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, and Anita Baker—but she has a style and flair all her own. Her title track “More” has an intense, gospel feel, that testifies to Small’s status as a survivor. The lyrics evidence her tribulations as a two-time World Trade Tower bombing victim, but proclaim her resolution to resist victimization and gain more from her experiences and the gifts of life and love.

Intimate and sexy tracks including “Take My Hand”, “Goodbye”, and “Touch Me When We’re Dancing” evoke images of smoke filled lounges, slowly swaying bodies, and invitations upstairs. The soft Brazilian undertones of Samba and Bossa Nova, underscore the romance and sensuality Small’s voice evokes. Her light soprano seems to float weightlessly over the notes; and the weight of her alto range adds depth and mystery to the arrangements. Ballads “Since I Fell for You” and “Yesterday Once More” reveal a vulnerable, sensitive side to Small’s jazz-influenced performance style.

Small’s vocal performance in songs “His Kiss” and “Right Now” is insistent and hard-hitting. She sings her personal stories of finding love and affirming life. Projecting her own experiences through her music provides a powerful catalyst for listener identification, with not only her compositions, but with Small as an individual. Small makes the earth shake for us as she tells us about “his kiss” and portrays the urgency of “right now”, making listeners want to move.

In classic style, Small makes us wait, saving the best almost for last. An unexpected gem, Small’s “Rain” is a mature dance anthem. With sweet, silky-soft vocals, earthy and lively lyrics, and a finger-snapping rhythm, “Rain” makes you want to dance in summer showers with the one you love. “Let’s get soaking wet / Let’s get soaking wet!” It’s hard to resist this hedonistic chant.

So why hold back. More will make you want to get lost in Ms. Charlotte Doreen Small. Her “Rain” will make you want to take her hand, to reach out and touch her while you’re dancing and never say goodbye. You will fall for her as she sings “Right Now”; and she’ll always leave you wanting “More”.

More
Charlotte Doreen Small

To say that Charlotte Doreen Small has a set of pipes that can really blow just doesn’t do enough to explain the power she wields with her instrument. It’s obvious that she has complete control of not only her voice but the music and the audience. She expertly weaves her songs to paint the mood for each track. You can almost see the color of her emotion through her voice. It’s clear that Charlotte is passionate about her music.

That sounds like a lot of other reviews I’ve read about Charlotte Doreen Small’s CD “More”. But, the truth is, all of it is true! Not only is she an accomplished vocalist but, she was destined to be here, now, for a time such as this. What? More colorful, flowery words for her CD? Nope. I truly believe that Charlotte was meant to be a premier singer here and now. That fact that she survived BOTH attacks on the World Trade Center defies the odds. My money is on Charlotte Doreen Small to become the next big R&B singing sensation.

Charlotte''s debut CD "More" has something for everyone! Besides the killer title track "More" (and the last track where she sings A cappella), Charlotte covers the Carpenter''s songs "Touch me when we''re dancing" and "Yesterday once more" adding her own special touch. She also breathes new life into the Buddy Johnson tune "Since I fell for you". Charlotte''s soulful R&B version stands strong among many other performances by well known artists over the years. Charlotte knows how to take a song and make it "hers" in a unique way while maintaining the song''s integrity. "Right now" and "Rain" are a couple of great dance tracks that are as contemporary as you would find in any club today.

Charlotte Doreen Small''s debut CD "More" is jam packed with great tracks! I recommend buying a copy!
