SALAD DAYS REVIEWS:

"Greetings from the Netherlands. When I first had correspondence with Herman Grimme, I have to admit I didn''t know what to expect. And truthfully, after listening to this record, I''m not sure I still know what happened. I say it over and over again, but after all these years of reviewing, I still manage to be surprised at how quickly and willingly I shed my jaded exterior when I feel I''m on the verge of discovering a major talent.

This is one of those records that has the potential of busting down international doors. It''s simple, elegant, classic, and pathbreaking. As I listened to the first few songs, I felt like I was reliving the moment I first heard The The. And having been fortunate enough to work on a session with the unmatched Matt Johnson, the flashbacks I had listening to this disc literally left me in awe. It sounds funny for me to say that, "awe", because that indescribable feeling is what separates a GREAT album from a very good or excellent one. And what''s so funny about this, is that it''s simply just how Herman Grimme writes songs.

This record is a piece of art, all clean lines, smooth textures, solidly structured, understated but emoting in volumes. It''s quiet, and the beauty of this is, that it sneaks up on you and grabs hold of your brain just at that moment when the melodies lull you into relaxation. At its best, this album rediscovers that quiet humility and humanity that great songs possess, having the ability to build up your emotions and rip them apart simultaneously.

I''ll admit, that''s a lot of praise, but even if you don''t get it on the first listen, I promise you that you will eventually. Herman Grimme writes in the classic, quirky style of The The, XTC, and brings touches of Neil Finn and the Dandy Warhols. This is a fantastic record, one of the best I''ve heard this year, bar none.

Standout tracks: "Phantom in My Mind", "We Love You" (a great remake of a Jagger/Richards classic), "Miracle Man", "Dodging the Cracks", "The Little Things""

" (...) No, it''s not the Beach Boys, it''s a Dutch musician who listened to Brian Wilson a lot. His name is Herman Grimme and he did it all by himself. This is a home-made record, but it doesn''t sound like that at all. My first reactions were: "Hey, this sounds pretty good ... is it British?" and: "This is first-rate stuff...Californian? Beautiful production, too.." (...) Intricate, laid-back songs, sometimes funny, even, but never boring.(...) This singer/songwriter absolutely deserves a bigger audience than he''s had so far."

( - Mart Smeets, VARA TV Magazine, 10 november 2001)

"...The album opens with a child''s voice saying "Hi", lovingly borrowed from Trader, a track on the Beach Boys'' Holland album. It creates the mood for eleven laid-back, pure pop songs that evoke the atmosphere of the afore-mentioned masterpiece. Songs like Dodging The Cracks, Open Your Eyes and Andy would not even have sounded out of place on Holland (...)Salad Days is a successful stab at making an album like the Beach Boys don''t make them anymore...."

( - Tjerk Lammers, Aloha Magazine, oct 2001)

"...Grimme clearly knows what he is doing (...)Occasionally his music reminds me of the Eels. He asks his listeners to spread the word if they like his album: Well, I surely do!"

( - Music Maker, oct 2001)

"More and more musicians seem to prove that they don''t need record companies to release a quality record...These tender songs grab your attention (...) their tone takes you back to psychedelic days. Grimme keeps the listener alert by employing playful details and wonderful vocal harmonies"

( - Hans Piƫt, Haagsche Courant, 12 oct 2001)

"Salad Days is contemporary pop music that oozes craftmanship (...) This music will stand the test of time"

( - Gerrie Spaansen, Oor Magazine 21, 20 oct 2001)
