Details:
I got my start singing harmonies with my twin sister in the church choir. I grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere, so I did everything I could do musically- school chorus, talents shows, harmony groups, musicals, even a movie when I was twelve! But I always knew what I wanted to do was write my own songs because I had something to say. So I started turning my poetry into songs. I had been a published poet by the time I was nineteen and had started playing the piano when I was four, but never really connected the two. In the beginning, all I wanted to say were my feelings that I could never seem to express in the spoken word. But as I grew older and took part in the world, I wanted to say things about women. Things I saw happening to women...domestic violence, rape, the selling of the "surburban housewife" dream, etc....things I''ve always found hard to swallow- and don''t think I should have to. It took me awhile to find my niche as a songwriter and as a singer, but in the last several years, I feel I really belong in the singer/songwriter, acoustic, contemporary folk kind of world. A world I feel is very lyrics-based, often with a socio-political message, heartfelt, melodic music. Simple, but powerful. That is what I am attempting to acheive with "A Lu11aby for E11en West." The concept for the album, which came to me in a dream I like to call "Subconscious Diva", and tumbled out on paper first over the next couple of weeks, is that under the exterior of every women, lives her truest potential. It is feminist in nature, in that it chronicles events in the lives of women and speaks of womens'' issues. But to me, really, it celebrates the strength of women, the courage to forge ahead against all odds. Most of these women I know; sometimes I am speaking of myself. But behind every ordinary women, are extraordinary secrets and stories. As I quote in my album liner notes..."What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open." -Muriel Reykeser
