Vocalist/guitarist Phyllis Chapell searches for captivating songs from around the world--embracing genres such as jazz, folk, popular music, and songs in up to 12 languages (from Brazil/Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). Phyllis Chapell has performed in concert venues, festivals, on radio and TV, and in countless other venues in the U.S., Latin America, Brazil, and Europe--as a solo artist and with her ensemble SIORA, which she co-leads with keyboardist/composer Dan Kleiman. SIORA plays contemporary world jazz: a blend of music from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and the U.S. (jazz and popular music), with their own unique arrangements. In addition, SIORA''s original compositions cover provocative social and environmental issues of global significance. She has recorded 2 CDs with SIORA. Their 2004 release called "Vis-a-Vis"--a collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Paul Wickliffe--is a multicultural jazz journey in 7 languages, including 3 provocative original selections in English. Guest artists include Howard Levy (Bela Fleck) on harmonica, John Swana (Criss Cross) on trumpet, Ralph Bowen (Criss Cross) on sax and flute, and Grammy-nominated percussionist Raphael Cruz. The CD reached #48 on national jazz radio charts, and is being played in over 30 cities in the U.S. and in Europe as well. It garnered a 4-star rating by critic Scott Yanow (Downbeat, Jazz Times, https://www.tradebit.com), who is also including Ms. Chapell in his upcoming book on the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time.
