A nice example of classic rock, replete with arena ready guitars and soaring, tenor vocals, Honest to God is the sophomore project from Alaskan born, California based singer/songwriter Trent Smith. Smith draws from his personal battle with Multiple Sclerosis in essaying lyrics that deal with alienation, doubt and redemption, and the struggle of giving these things over to a loving God who has answers for all life’s questions. “Enough for Me” rides a breezy keyboard driven melody while examining the surrender to The One who loves enough to erase the bitterness that comes with the snares of this world, while “You’re Not Alone” is a pop waltz featuring Smith’s own violin playing (He was a violin major in college) as he assures those frozen with doubt that there is no need to wallow in loneliness. The instrumentation is varied and production creative as Smith enlists the help of Gary Cambra, former member of seminal art rock band, The Tubes on both ends. Creativity and a willingness to mix genres (Jazz, rock, Beatle-esque pop) give the album a nice variety. Smith’s greatest strength is that of encouragement as Honest to God contains the questions that unify all humanity, while providing the keys to redemption in a relatable way that should affect any traveler.
