Urban Hermits – speaking Donegal words of wisdom
2007 was a highly exciting year for Urban Hermits already and there have been a few bangs to The Hermits snagged a gig that most bands would sell their souls for – at The Cavern Club in Liverpool , rightful home of The Beatles – where they will showcase their talent on Saturday 8th December. There was a heady send-off gig in the group''s hometown of Ballybofey on Friday, November 30th in Barcelona.
On top of that the band secured the slot on Irish TG4 show Sile which they played on Friday 9th November where they showcased their infectious song ‘Won’t You Stay Around’. The band are still riding the crest of their album wave: the well-titled ‘Some Belated Truths’ – a title which underscores several themes in the band’s music, including that wisdom is hard-learned and that as fallible human beings we learn too little too late.
This album is a series of weighty pronouncements on life and love that have issued forth from the searing pen of singer-songwriter Tommy Bonner. The band possesses a jagged honesty, giving the songs an emotional punch and visceral power that will draw every listener in and leave some on the floor. It takes courage to stand apart in today’s music scene and to wear your heart on a tousled sleeve. Urban Hermits do just that with panache.
The band’s artistic lineage can perhaps be explained in terms of their unashamed admiration for the music of Richard Ashcroft/The Verve. The latter’s best-known album was called ‘Urban Hymns’ and in the songwriting of the Urban Hermits we find some of that same sense of alienation. There are also shades of Radiohead, Josh Rouse and the bitter acidity of REM but, as in that band''s greatest song, the ''Sweetness Follows''.
‘Some Belated Truths’ is a gritty songscape that sorts through the debris of life and relationships with an admirable and purposeful determination and leaves a salty aftertaste. It washes over you like a Donegal downpour out of a clear blue sky and soaks you through to your mortal skin, leaving you both startled and exhilarated.
From the outset, there is the sense that these are guys who have learned to live life in the sense of ‘keeping it real’. There is not a false note in the entire album, lyrically or musically. There is not a vestige of pretension or imposture. ‘Some Belated Truths’ radiates integrity and sincere, heartfelt songwriting that would put a lot of higher-profile bands to shame.
There is an acute sense of what it means to be lonely – or left alone, to put it more accurately – in the album. Alone with ourselves or alone with everybody. Alone on deserted, dimly-lit, rain-washed streets with only the biting cold for a companion. According to Tommy Bonner the signature lyric in the album is: ''Withered trees hog the streetlights/pale rusted leaves refuse to die/and the rooftops know the secrets/the untold stories of the sky''-Track 3,Headstrong(Something Beautiful). These stunning lyrics evoke a place where we can sit and ponder the great mysteries of life while counting crows...
This album gives a taste of what it is like to love, to lose, to hate, to be fond, to fall asleep when it’s light. In here there are days half-lived; nights half-slept; souls on the run until they return to where they belong. My favourite lines in the album are in ‘Wood for the Trees’: “The star in your life fades away and falls to a place where you can’t see the wood for the trees, gettin’ late, is this all that can’t be saved.” Sometimes in life our biggest problem is to see the wood for the trees.
There are some pearls of wisdom and uncanny distillation of real-life experiences in this album (“What you lose in cash you get back in karma” “Please state your reasons why you called up a taxi and went home” “So let’s sit a while, let’s sit and ponder, if we drag our feet too long...”) This album opens up and offers a path of meaning through the chaos and carnage of an uncertain world.
The Urban Hermits clarify, cut through and capture a host of real and imagined experiences with the precision of a surgeon’s knife and a fiendish sense of humour. The tinsel is ripped off an array of experiences, many presumably extracted from the fabric of their own lives, to reveal the real substance beneath.
‘Some Belated Truths’ is well-produced with captivating artwork and the Urban Hermits exude a clear, crisp sound with infectious hooks and melodies. As their unique sound has been honed, they have added sonic texture to Bonner''s lyrical depth. Urban Hermits returned from Liverpool speaking ‘words of wisdom’. Many have been spoken already are there are many more to come.

In late 2006, Tommy Bonner returned from Hungary with a self-penned and produced album, ''Some belated truths''. After combing his locality for talented musicians he had the massive fortune to unearth the musical talents that are Jamie McLean(Lead Guitar)Paddy Reynolds(Drums & backing vocals)and Dylan Ramsey(Bass & Backing Vocals). These guys were to give Tommy’s already polished songs a new direction in the live medium,
Following intense, productive and hugely creative rehearsals through the early part of 2007 the newly-formed 4 piece went on a mini-national tour to promote the record. There were a number of stand-out gigs on this tour, most notably in Temple Bar Music Centre(Dublin, April 21) The Balor Theatre (Eargail Arts Festival, July 22) The Music and Surf Festival (Kilkee, Co.Clare Sept 8&9). The end of the year culminated with a gig in The Cavern Club, Liverpool, UK-Home of the Beatles and dubbed ‘the most famous club in the world’.
During this time the band managed to squeeze in their debut national TV appearance (TG4, November 12) and write a considerable number of new songs.
Due to external factors and Commitments,2008 has been relatively quiet for ''The Hermits'' but they have a number of performances lined up for the Summer/Autumn and are going into the studio in August to record an EP.
