Details:
Woody Guthrie’s American Song is an exhilarating stage musical based on Guthrie’s songs and writings, which has been seen at over 100 theaters around the US since its world premiere in 1988. On this beautifully produced cast album, five singers and a top-notch bluegrass ensemble perform 22 of Woody’s songs in the tradition of the Almanacs, the Weavers, and Peter, Paul and Mary – from well-known classics including This Land is Your Land, The Sinking of the Reuben James, Grand Coulee Dam, Pastures of Plenty and Hard Travelin’ to less familiar gems like Dust Storm Disaster and I Don’t Feel at Home on the Bowery No More. The performers bring the music to life with humor, emotion, theatrical sophistication and consummate musical skill. Excerpts from Woody’s writings which accompany the songs help place them in their social, historical and cultural contexts. The musical was conceived and adapted by Peter Glazer, son of folksinger Tom Glazer, with sparkling vocal arrangements and orchestrations by Jeff Waxman.

Reviewing a production of the show in the Chicago Sun Times, critic Hedy Weiss wrote:

“In the final moments of Woody Guthrie''s American Song, a gaunt, hungry-looking man stands in the spotlight with his guitar and quietly begins to sing ‘This Land Is Your Land.’

Slowly, the light begins to spread as he is joined by his fellow actors. The sound of their clarion voices grows, reaching a thundering roar, as the audience, too, begins tapping feet, clapping hands and singing in full voice. And what began as a deeply personal anthem explodes into a glorious public celebration of a landscape, a history and a spirit of invincibility.

The song, and its hugely stirring performance, is a fitting climax to a glorious show and a magnificent theatrical journey that pays moving tribute to one of the great and defining balladeers this country has produced.

Conceived, adapted and directed with searing power by Peter Glazer . . . Woody Guthrie’s American Song is a vivid, emotionally gripping collage of words and music that evokes the life and times of an exceptional man who perceived himself as an everyman.”
