Since moving to Los Angeles in 1999, Zak Schaffer has kept himself busy as a singer/songwriter, sideman, and producer. One of those guys who can play just about anything, Zak has been a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and drummer to all manner of artists in and around LA.
Sometime in 2005 Zak was on tour with Peter Himmelman. After hearing some of Zak’s recordings, Peter offered him the opportunity to come to his studio and “make a record in five days”. The offer inspired Zak to put together a collection of songs and start the process of recording demos.
The demo-ing process proved more involved than initially planned, and rough demos became fully produced recordings. It seemed that Zak was perfectly well equipped in the garage studio that he shared with Marc “Doc” Dauer.
In February of 2006 he emerged from the garage studio with “Maybe It’s Me”. Part Paul McCartney, part Neil Young, part Police. Zak calls it a “celebration of pop”. Well written and produced, each song inhabits a different part of the rock music spectrum.
Most of the instruments were played by Zak, but some of his friends were brought in for inspiration. Ben Peeler and Brendan Buckley took a couple days off from Shakira to add lap steel guitar and drums respectively. Joe Kennedy (Pete Yorn, Macy Gray) added keyboards, Scott Seiver, Luke Adams, and Malcolm Cross were kind enough to play drums.
Moving from pure pop (Amelia), Alt-country (Silicon Chip) Jazzy-pop (The Moon), and an eight minute rock epic (Awakening), “Maybe It’s Me” has something for everyone.
