Fresh and different. Alternative world-beat folk pop. A singer/songwriter with a soaring crystalline voice. These are words that have been used to describe Canadian-born artist Christa Haberstock and Child of God Music.
A Little More, Christa''s third release since 1997, has been called a "fantastic eclectic blend of instrumentation, combined with beautiful vocals and very strongly written songs". CCM magazine portrays A Little More as "a refreshing musical adventure", with the essence of the message being found in the album''s first song: "We are meant to discover meaning and mercy in Christ, whose love is the colour of life."
Christa was introduced to international rhythms and sounds through the artists she listened to - synthesists like Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Sting, and Enya. When she began recording, those influences started showing up in the exotic instrumentation and polyrhythms that she wrapped around her singing.
In 1995, the death of her father, a popular Canadian television personality, became the catalyst for starting her music career. "''Carpe Diem'' suddenly became very real," she said. "I was reminded that nobody is guaranteed a ''tomorrow'', but I did have a ''today'', so that''s where I started." Drawing from the well of her post-graduate studies in music, her interest in other cultures, and years of directing children''s choirs, college students, and black gospel choir at her home church in Edmonton, Alberta, Child of God Music was born.
Since the release of her first album Child of God, Christa has performed across western and maritime Canada, in and around Texas, parts of the US, and in Liberia, West Africa. Most recently Christa was invited to open for Burlap to Cashmere at Six Flags over Texas, and has shared the stage with Dove Award winning Female Vocalist of the Year Nichole Nordeman. Today she can be heard on Christian radio across Canada, into the U.S., Puerto Rico, Spain, and in West Africa.
In 2000, Christa was nominated for Best Religious/Gospel/Christian Artist by the Alberta Recording Industry Association. In 2001, "Living In Colour" won a coveted spot as a Contest Finalist in the UNISONG International Song Contest. That same year, "Masterpiece", a song yet to be officially released, was voted Best Song by the National Association of Christian Artists and Songwriters, and was nominated for "Pop Recorded Song of the Year" by the Canadian Gospel Music Association.
Christa Haberstock continues to win the hearts of listeners with her well-crafted songs, unique production, and telling lyrics. With her child-like love for Jesus and devotion to the creation of her music, Christa''s heart continues to be reflected in her life on, and off, the stage.
