Laura Fleming’s music can be described as a mix of pop, indie, soul, and jazz with a touch of the blues. With open, honest lyrics, her songs talk about love - falling in love and losing love. Her songs speak to the dark places you can find yourself in, but also of the redemption that can be found.
Laura grew up in Palos Park, a small suburb outside of Chicago. She attended Illinois Wesleyan University on a voice scholarship and while there she studied every kind of vocal music she could, learning songs in Italian, Spanish, French, German and Russian. She sang with the IWU Jazz Ensemble as the female vocalist and took vocal jazz lessons at the Musica Creativa in Madrid during a semester abroad. During the spring of her first year, she performed at an annual event called Slicing Watermelons that was created to celebrate women in music. The response from the audience inspired her to start writing more and more, filling notebooks with thoughts, fears, hopes, daydreams, everything that filled her head.
In the winter of her sophomore in college, Laura was diagnosed with retinal detachment. She was forced to leave school for a semester on medical leave and underwent several surgeries to try and save her vision. For six months she couldn''t see, but she could hear. And so she listened, and listened, and listened. And she wrote and wrote and wrote.
By the summer Laura’s eyes almost completely healed. She took two of her songs to ARS Recording Studio in Alsip, IL and was offered a production deal with producer/engineer Larry Schara. Her forthcoming EP, Never Say Never, is due out this spring.
When asked what her overall message is, Laura responds, “Believe in Love. Love can hurt you, confuse you, break you, but it can save you. True love, when you find it, can redeem all of the past hurts and can bring you back to life.” Her song “Breathe” talks about the need to slow down, to step back from the busy-ness of life once in a while to a quieter place where you can reflect, pray, and restore yourself. Her song “Never Say Never” states quite simply to never say never to love. Don''t give up.
Laura is now bringing her original work to Chicago’s independent music scene, her first gig opening for Jessica Sonner at the Double Door. She has performed at Wise Fool''s Pub, The Elbo Room, Uncommon Ground, Silvie''s Lounge, North Beach Chicago and Fitzgerald''s. She has opened for several national touring artists, including Jon McLaughlin (Island DefJam) and Meika Pauley. Her goal for her music career? To be a recording artist as her Real Job.
