The musical evolution of Sean Roux continues to be an ongoing journey. Each experience, whether as a vocalist, musician, producer, or studio engineer, adds to the essence of the artist. But Sean Roux can’t merely be judged by the sum of his parts – at least not yet. There is still plenty of growth yet to be realized for this Raleigh, NC based artist.
It is his life experiences that have brought Sean Roux to the next chapter of his music journey. With his latest effort, the Fairfax County, Va. native branches his sound out to include key elements previously not covered in his music. Roux’s new CD, Not Without Soul, breaks new ground by delving into modern soul, with a pinch of neosoul vocal flavor added in for touch. By layering both soul instrumental and vocal arrangements into an alternative rock and pop sound, Not Without Soul accurately describes Roux’s vision of his album. “Not Without Soul began as a much larger project involving more musicians,” Roux says. “I was trying to trump my last CD with a two-disc set. However, the project eventually became way too large for even that.”
His two-disc aspirations aside, Roux’s final cut of Not Without Soul is an eight-song ode to expressing intimacy and vulnerability and the walls that surround those feelings in a relationship. The album also explores dealing with trying to maintain one’s humanity in an ever-growing materialistic world. “The ideas aren’t revolutionary,” Roux says. “It’s just more or less something I noticed that appears to be absent from the masses today. The lack of civics or respect, I’d say.” With its plush guitar arrangements, melodic keyboard textures and live percussion, the music projects a raw warmth and sensitivity that reaches into the hearts and minds of both rock and soul music lovers alike. Vocally, Roux conjures up memories of how blue-eyed soul singers used to sound in their 1970’s heyday.
Sean Roux has a message for music lovers around the world. And with his latest project, you can best believe that message will not be without soul.
