I sense a considerable composer behind all those stylistic changes, and I think a lot more recordings of Krenek need to come out before we have any sense of his achievements. If this collection is any indication, Krenek in his old age (these works were written between the ages of 72 and 88) remained productive and quite peppery. Southwest Chamber Music has performed a lot of Krenek’s music in recent years, and the expert performances on this disc present his music in the best possible light.

From the ensemble that gave the American premieres of the instrumental works on the CD comes a worthwhile collection of late and very late chamber music by Ernst Krenek. In their skittery expressionism, the Zeitlieder call to mind a meeting of Bachiana No. 5 and Pierrot Lunaire. For all the lyricism residing in his late music, Krenek was also capable of producing a combustible piece like Dyophonie, Op. 241.
The highest Krenek opus of which I know, Dyophonie is characterized by rapid attacks and snapping pizzicatos. Outstanding performances, lifelike, intimate sound. A worthwhile acquisition for admirers of this challenging composer.
