It has often been said that if you''re going to copy someone, you should copy the best. On his new album, “Nasty Habits," Stone Cooper has clearly taken this advice to heart. Cooper''s Dylan debt is huge. He''s even referenced Dylan in the album artwork for gosh sakes, (as if anyone could ever possibly have missed Bob''s influence on his work). At least he’s embraced it. Half of the album’s tracks are arranged sparsely with only acoustic guitar. The other half feature the superbly effectively spare lead guitar work of Chris Rogers, rock-solid drumming from Leza Squyres and no-nonsense bass support from Jeff Blake. These tracks have a wonderfully tough, gutsy, sinewy feel. Thing Dylan backed by the Replacements. The album gets off to a rocky start with three tracks that have practically the same rhythm as well as the same sonic character. For some reason, the vocals on the first two cuts are buried in the mix. By the third track, you begin to wonder if every song will have the same chord progression and rhythm as the one before. And then, there it is. The first acoustic track, “Gotta Make It Last”. The pattern is broken, and all that stands between the listener and the song is a 12-string guitar and intriguing voice. The interesting lyrics are now audible. It is a very effective presentation. From there on the album just gets better. The rockin’ groove on “ Shake It” is irresistible, even the lyrics range from the oafish “…you’re so cute, I wanna dump my load down your chute,” to the ridiculous “I wanna take you out in the sun, I wanna shove my weinie in your bun.” But hey, this is rock and roll, right? Stone’s Dylanesque delivery comes to the for on “No Escape,” featuring backing vocals which add extra dimension. “Spinning Circus” incorporates a very nice single line bridge and ends with effective dramatic lyrical movement. The harmonica on the cyclical “What Women Do” is a bit obvious, but effective on a song with obscure poetic imagery and quite deft lyrical handling. This is a flawed album and yet the tracks stand proudly, even defiantly, on their strengths. And, they wear their flaws as badges of honor and humanity.
