MP3 The Helmut Stein Experience - Uptown Game

A mix of deep soul, jazz, blues and cabaret styles we call - SOUL CABARET.

12 MP3 Songs
BLUES: Blues Vocals, JAZZ: Jazz Vocals

Details:
The Helmut Stein Experience plays a mix of Deep Soul, Jazz, Blues and Cabaret. The music howls as well as whispers. A sound we call "Soul Cabaret".

Keyboardist/composer R. Scott writes songs for mad souls and late night dalliances. He started the band in 2000. His gruff, r&b-infused vocal and keyboard style are the bands'' foundation.

Philip Golla adds smoky shades of sax and clarinet to the musical landscape as well as a song or two. His instrumental prowess and smooth vocals allow bursts of expressive soloing and lulling melodic accompaniment.

Trumpeter David Dusseau takes sonic flight and adds punch to the sound. He works the mute to spooky effect, doubles on flugelhorn and some scat for added texture.

The rhythm section of Mark Gusek (drums) and Sean O. (bass) keep the music contemporary while employing classic elements from the great soul, jazz eras. They strike a sublime balance of past and present.

April Sweeney takes the spotlight on vocals. Her style is sexy and powerful - a combination of blues wail and jazz whisper. She also tells stories with vivid lyrical contributions.

The band issued their debut single "On Return/Big, Bad Feeling" on Butterfly Records and a self-released debut album "On Return" on their own Do Your Worst! Records in 2002. The band is in demand with regular gigs in Southern California, was a 2003 Orange County Music Award nominee in the Best Live and R&B catagories and won for Best Blues in 2004.

Uptown Game would be the perfect album for a burlesque routine. I wouldn''t be at all surprised to hear the sultry strains of April Sweeney''s voice or R. Scott''s organ cue up behind The Velvet Hammer. Just you wait and see. - Michelle Salcedo, LA Music Guide

From the strong instrumental strolls captured on "That Barking Dog'' and "The Boogaloo Inn" to the infectious funk of "Takes a Lot," The Helmut Stein Experience mines the past while carving out a sound of its own, blending jazz artfully with a number of other styles. - Robert Kinsler, The OC Register

Top notch Cabaret Jazz & Blues. Belter April Sweeney is the sexiest singer and R. Scott on keys and the bands primary songwriter proves he means business. - Rollong Stoned, https://www.tradebit.com
