Carioca was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1955. He started very early with his musical education. From experiences in rock bands he passed on to study different styles of music and to master the knowledge of many instruments. He has developed an extraordinary versatility and is at home with 6, 8 and 12 string guitars, bass, sitar, harp, synthesizer, kalimba, djembe, caxixi, berimbau, tambora and bongos. Furthermore, he is an exquisite, broad-ranged vocalist.
In 1979, he finished his first album, "Misterios da Amazonia", and to date has produced a total of 15 albums for which he has brought together many diverse, talented musicians. Since the 1980''s, he has also been working as a music teacher, an arranger of more than thirty independent LP''s and a composer for theatre, dance, films and television. Together with Ted Barlocher he founded the "Escola de Samba do Apito".
Carioca has performed internationally for over 25 years. His music is well known worldwide and in his native Brazil. In 2005 he played to an audience of 12,000 at the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival receiving 5 encores! He has only recently begun to tour in North America playing concerts in New York, Santa Fé, San Francisco, Hawaii, Toronto and Montreal. In 2007 has played at the prestigious Yoshi Jazz Club in Oakland and at Joe''s Pub in New York.
