Magnus Copa is the product of 4 years of patient, ambitious-yet-budget-less artistry. The gentlemen of Copa have finally summed up the remains of many of their disjointed recording sessions governed by engineers Hectar Orocho, Matt Manix, and John Bufkin, often occurring between midnight and 8 a.m. in a the dismal brick shell of a college recording studio. Before the songs ever had a place on stage at an exhilarating Copa show, they were first imagined and then pressed to ''tape'' in these sessions.
Magnus Copa''s extraordinarily eclectic sound is expressed in the soaring guitars and strings in "Come Alive", revelatory evangelical sex music that restrains itself from instruction by simply asking the questions in "Flesh and Bone", and the nuevo-Zeppelinesque blues/techno adventure of "If You Open That Door". The album resists the convenience of musical categorization, diverse from song to song as a result of various recording methods, different engineers, and multiple mixing engineers and consoles. Perhaps its only coalescence comes by the use of consistent lyrical wit, and the use of irony contrasted by occasional adventures into sincerity. It is a project that is well suited by the title "Magnus Copa". It is ambitious, diverse, experimental, exciting, and interesting throughout.
Consider the Police on a Pink Floyd-style musical adventure to the dark side of Dick Dale, or Coldplay with bout of the Zooropas after spinning too quickly to Bowie''s "Let''s Dance."
