Kimmy Fleck was born in Oregon on June 7, 1984, the second youngest of five children. She was raised on a farm in Woodburn, Oregon. During the years of 9 through 14 years of age, Kimmy was a member of 4-H and AQHA, taking riding lessons, traveling to many venues with her family to show and ride her horse and earn ribbons. Her parents owned a construction business, where most of the siblings had their turn at helping during the summers, learning all about physical labor! Music was always a big part of the every day life in the Fleck household, even if it was just singing along with the car radio on the way to school. Weekly piano lessons were mandatory, in hopes of ingraining an appreciation for “making your own fun” and not just watching TV.
Kimmy was in 4-H and AQHA showing horses for several years before she found boys! It wasn’t until high school that Kimmy realized she had an ear for music and could sing harmony before she realized what she was doing…it just came naturally. What didn’t come naturally was performing on stage, which just the thought of, made Kimmy sick to her stomach. She would tell the teachers she was sick just so she wouldn’t have to be in front of a crowd. All that changed with entering a local Junior Miss Pagaent in high school, taking voice lessons, and facing those fears by performing the song to a packed auditorium. She didn’t win, but finally overcame her fears. That Christmas, a guitar was under the tree for Kimmy, which opended up a whole new, wonderful world of music. After graduating from McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon, Kimmy moved three hours away from home to Bend, Oregon, to attend the local community college.
She continued her studies, plus snowboarding, kayaking, working construction, and singing in the church choir. Two things happened in her life to change the road she was on. First, Kimmy was given the book “The Purpose-Driven Life”, which was just the push she needed to leave school behind and follow what she loved-singing. And second, after seeing one of her favorite singers, Shania Twain perform in Portland that winter, and catching Shania’s eye from the second row, Shania told her “You go girl!” Kimmy knew what the next step would be: making a demo and moving to Nashville. She had the confidence and passion, if not the experience or knowledge yet of what it would take to break into the music business. Five months later, Kimmy packed her car with the demo, guitar, clothes, shoes, coffee-maker, and computer (and Mom) for a cross-country trip to Nashville. In just a short time, by any standards, she found many friends, two wonderful producers to make an album of original songs, shot a music video, and continues to live her own reality show! A book must be coming……
