...a little like opening an artist''s closet and digging down into the bottom stuff. Hope Alane''s vocals are bright and lilting, reminding me of Linda Smith and why I like her recordings so much as well. Producer john, who runs the little grasshopper records label, paints with a palette of atmospheric guitars, human-enfused drum machines, tack piano, analogs and the like that embrace the singer and her songs in a way that makes this release one of those rare ear gems you''ll keep. Like a box full of photographs or something. This is very highly recommended.

Hope Alane sings beautiful melodies that are accentuated by these mesmerizing pop-rock soundscapes.

This disc runs the gamut from spacey dream-pop ("Patience," "Spinning World") to more charged rock ("Earth''s Full," "Brave")...Alane''s disc succeeds on account of its unconventional experimentation. Be it the layered vocals of pretty "Pacific Grove" or the microtonal shifts in the solo of "Brave," it''s clear Hope Alane isn''t afraid to try new things out.

Hope Alane is very different from the average female singer/songwriter. Instead of trying to sound like Kate Bush or look and dance like Britney Spears, Ms. Alane creates music that is anything but obvious...and she does not follow musical trends. "Old Old Friends" instantly sets the stage for Pink Sky Blue...an album that truly does not sound like other artists''. Alane''s songs are melodic and thoughtful...and feature strangely abstract arrangements. Her voice is subdued...and the overall tone is both polished and progressive. While the gravity of these songs might not be obvious at first...upon closer observation, the weight of material becomes clear. Wonderfully inventive tunes include "Earth''s Full," "Holding Hands," "Chemistry," and "Against the Sky." The cover graphics (courtesy of Star Nigro) are absolutely beautiful. Intensely satisfying.

...admirable for its fearlessness, and definitely worth a listen. Hope Alane is part folk singer, part abstract expressionist, and certain songs will have you reaching for the repeat button.
