Details:
EVIL FARM CHILDREN……………
The name may sound like a B-grade drive-in horror flick. But, they are raw and raunchy trio from Canada’s capital, Ottawa, Ontario, with a reputation for intense stage shows, and a growing legion of fans. Since forming in the summer of 2005, this trio has played at many of the main live music venues in the Ottawa region, as well as playing shows in Toronto and Montreal.
Their sound is real rock’n’roll, with a roots-rock flavour. The band can easily do a rocking surf instrumental with the fervor and zest of Dick Dale, and, in a heartbeat, shift gears and roll right into a twangy country murder ballad, a rockin’ rockabilly rave up, or a Stooges influenced, feedback infused, pounding rock’n’roll song.
The band includes some veterans of the Ottawa music scene:
Dave Kerr plays guitar and sings the bulk of the lead vocals. Dave was a founding member of the grunge metal band DeadBeatDads. He also played in the short-lived pop punk project WizzleTeeth.
Jeb Bond pounds the drums and does background vocals. Jeb has played drums in numerous Ottawa bands over the years, starting back in the early 80’s with the Ottawa punk band The Restless Virgins. Jeb was a founding member of the power-pop band Screaming Bamboo, who toured Canada and charted on College radio during the mid-80’s. Jeb has in many Ottawa-based bands since then, including a 3 year stint in Baton Rouge, in the band Tall. Upon returning to Ottawa, he was a founding member of the Ottawa band Freudhammer.
Janice Fitzsimmons rounds out the trio on bass and vocals. Janice is a founding member of EFC, and has been working with Dave on this project since late 2004, when they formed the short-lived band The Ambassadors. She was also bassist for the now defunct all-girl band, Revv Engine.
In the fall of 2006, EFC released their 5-song CD EP, Knuckle Duster, (available through their myspace page) which captures the raw & raunchy sound of an Evil Farm Children concert. The 5 original songs on the EP range from a surf-style instrumental, a country-esque murder song, to a psychobilly rave-up. Knuckle Duster charted on both CKCU and CHUO in Ottawa, and was selected as one of the best local releases of 2006 by several CKCU DJs. The Knuckle Duster EP has received airplay from several DJs on Jersey City’s WFMU, including Three Chord Monte’s Joe Belock, and Bill Kelly.
Evil Farm Children II: The Evilling includes 8 originals by the band, three of which are instrumentals. Janice sings lead on the haunting revenge ballad Valley Justice, and Dave sings lead on Border Blaster, Booze Can, Brain Buffett, & Straight’n’Narrow. Dave also sings on their surf-rock version of Hangover, originally by Canada’s legends of the 70’s, Max Webster; a crowd pleaser at live shows. Their original material matters most, but for their live shows, the band has been known to whip out some “Evil-ized” versions of songs by the likes of Dick Dale, Black Sabbath, Tom Waits, Deke Dickerson, Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn, and, even Alice Cooper.
