Details:
This whole project was done completely bass-ackwards!
But I digress . . . let''s see . . .
One day Deedee started taking guitar classes. She worked on learning cover tunes. They never sounded right to her. She thought, "I''d rather listen to Joni Mitchell or Shawn Colvin do their own tunes. I sound like poop next to them!" She was very discouraged. Poor Deedee! Then one day Deedee sat down and started playing chords and humming her own tune and out popped her own words through her own voice! She was very moved. Lucky Deedee!

A short while later, Deedee was tooling along, minding her own business, when, BANG! she had a great idea! "Why don''t I write my own damn songs? Then no one will know when I mess up!" So, with the help of her guitar teacher and songwriting mentor, Jim Remington, she boldly started writing her own tunes. Then the portal just opened up! She began dreaming full songs! Lyrics would pour out of her at the oddest times. Wonderfully supportive people came into her life and encouraged her to get her tunes out so others could hear them. She went to the Lyons Song School, joined the Swallow Hill Songwriters group, started hitting all the open-mics and eventually developed a style all her own.

It was about then that the whole bass-ackwards ordeal began. It started when Deedee got another one of her bright ideas! With others egging her on, she decided it would be loads of fun to record her own demo CD. Deedee had no idea what she was getting into when she set out to make a quick demo of her tunes. If she had, she would have either done it quite differently or not all. But such is the way of innocence. She rented some equipment, transformed her living room into a recording studio, took some time off work, told her family to be quiet and then proceeded to drive herself nuts trying to figure it all out. Luckily, she had a patient, supportive family and many sweet, knowledgeable and talented friends who came to her rescue. People heard what she was up to and before she knew it, she had oodles of skilled musicians pitching in to help her accomplish her demo project.

Then, ADAT in hand, she went to see her multi-talented-really-super-smart friend, Tom Ross, in New York, to see if he could put down a couple of tracks. But, lo and behold, somehow, the whole thing exploded into a full-blown CD, complete with percussion, solo instruments, stunning guitar leads, and more bells and whistles than she ever thought possible. "I went about this whole thing completely backwards! Not only did I not know that you''re supposed to record with a click track, I didn''t even know what a click track was! But you know, even though recording my guitar and vocals without a click track proved to be a major pain in the butt for my friends, the end result was actually quite interesting and remarkable. I learned that mistakes can be very beautiful!"

Deedee didn''t let the fact that she started out on the wrong foot stop her.
"The best part of this whole experience was trying to figure out what each song needed. I loved collaborating with other musicians, especially Tom. We would listen to one of my tunes, just guitar and vocals, and I''d say things like, ''This tune is misty, mountainous and lonely,'' and next thing I knew, he was digging out a charanga, a tambura or a twelve string fretless guitar and laying down breath-taking tracks. Every song was like this. Each tune got special treatment and we''d lose track of time figuring out how to dress it up and give it it''s own special personality. It wasn''t till the whole thing was over that I realized what we had done. In less than a week, in a daze from serious sleep deprivation, we had, in effect, co-produced a CD!"

Then the entire project just snowballed. From mixing with Daron Curtis Skanson to mastering with Tom Capek at Colorado Sound Studios to yet another timely rescue when Celeste Krenz jumped in to do a quick fix on her CD booklet, the entire project just grew and grew to be more and more unbelievable. "If I''d know it was going to grow into something this big, I''d have done it quite differently. But then again, if I''d know it was going to blossom into this, I''d have probably chickened out all together! It was like giving birth when I didn''t even know I was pregnant. I still can''t believe this CD is mine."

And what a CD!
Each song is it''s own unique world. Each song tells it''s own tale. Each has it''s own exotic flavor. And yet, somehow, it ties together too. Deedee''s first CD, "WHAT IF?" is 73 minutes of her soul put to quirky, beautiful music.
Going on a long road trip? Take this sucker along! Taking a candle-lit bubble bath? Pop this puppy in! Think your life is nuts? Join the party and listen to what Deedee has to say about hers! Then write and tell her what you have to say. Who knows? You could quite feasibly end up the subject of one of her new tunes on her next CD . . . which she thinks she''ll probably end up doing bass-ackwards as well, since it was so much fun the first time.
Happy listening!
