Robby Romero

Biography

Robby Romero is a musician, producer, writer, director, and entrepreneur. He began his career at the age of 13 singing his songs in New Mexico’s Taos Plaza cantinas and cafés. His 1979 self-titled album had its debut on LA’s hottest FM station KROQ introduced by Rodney Bingenheimer, “The Mayor Of Sunset Strip”. Mr. Romero supported the album with a string of concerts in Hollywood’s talked-about club scene, from the world famous Troubadour to the infamous Whiskey A-Go-Go. Throughout his youth Mr. Romero composed, recorded and performed with some of the most artistic minds of the time.

In 1989, Mr. Romero founded Native Children''s Survival (NCS), a non-profit organization designed to create awareness through the arts about the protection and healing of Mother Earth and all her children. He also formed the groundbreaking and critically acclaimed Native Rock band, Red Thunder. Red Thunder debuted from the Apache Territories of the Southwest as part of MTV’s Street Party broadcast and has since, “...commanded the largest viewing audience of any contemporary Indian group.” - Encyclopedia of North American Indians Past to Present.

In 1990, Mr. Romero’s first music video, “Is It Too Late”, was broadcast around the world from the Kremlin in Moscow following President Gorbachev''s historic environmental message at the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders. “Is It Too Late” earned Mr. Romero the title of United Nations Ambassador of Youth for the Environment. He was presented this title along with a certificate of appreciation from United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) signed by Executive Director, Mostafa K. Tolba during the Children and the Environment Project at the United Nations Headquarters General Assembly Hall in New York City. The event featured a screening of “Is It Too Late”, a live performance by Mr. Romero, and a presentation by Chief Oren Lyons (Faithkeeper Onondaga Nation).

For nearly two decades, Mr. Romero has created high profile and successful Awareness Campaigns, Public Services Announcements, and Rockumentary Films on behalf of NCS. His acclaimed and award-winning work has reached millions of people through National and International music tours, broadcast premiers on major networks including MTV, VH1, Sundance Channel, CNN, and SABC Africa, and prestigious screenings from President Clinton’s Global Initiative, to Robert Redford’s Sundance Summit.

Recently, Mr. Romero joined Carlos Santana, Yusuf Islam (a.k.a. Cat Stevens), Archbishop Desmond Tutu, President Mikhail Gorbachev, and President Shimon Peres in a Concert for Peace in Bochum, Germany. He had the honor of performing with and signing Carlos Santana’s classic hits “Black Magic Woman” and "Oye Como Va" before performing his own hits, “Heartbeat” and “Hidden Medicine”. Proceeds from this concert supported the humanitarian projects of the Milagro Foundation in San Francisco, and the Desmond Tutu Peace Center in South Africa.

Further, Mr. Romero’s participation on the “Encounters: An Alliance For Children” European CD release and 15-city tour helped raise over one million Euros to support 13 different children’s programs around the world. $250,000 was donated to the Lakota Circle Village to help build the Sacred Language School on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota.

Mr. Romero’s current project, “PAINTING THE WORLD” is a half hour rockumentary film special with an Eco packaged Native Rock enhanced EP/CD soundtrack. The soundtrack consists of three Indigenous music tracks and two long form music videos composed and performed by Robby Romero with special guest artists from Indigenous territories around the world.

The goal of the project is create awareness about the historical adoption of the “United Nations Declaration on The Rights of Indigenous Peoples”, and bridge the gap between Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights, and the Environment.

The first single from the CD is entitled “All Our Colors”. This song and music video celebrates and presents the beauty, tradition, and mystical power of Indigenous Peoples’ culture and territories. “All Our Colors” features Indigenous musicians from seven Indigenous regions in the world. These musicians sing and perform in their traditional languages and with their traditional instruments. Some of the lineup includes: P. Town Boyz, the acclaimed traditional youth drum group from the Red Lake Ojibwe Nation in North America; Brian Majola, the celebrated Indigenous recording artist from the Zulu territories in Soweto, South Africa; Yungchen Lhamo, the leading Tibetan vocalist on the world stage; and Sofia Jannok, a rising star from the Saami territories in Europe.

The second single is entitled “Who’s Gonna Save You”. This song and music video presents a powerful message with haunting lyrics, majestic visional images, and stunning footage about the overwhelming threat of global warming and climate change as seen through the eyes of Indigenous Peoples at the point of impact. The single features the Arctic Village Choir from the Gwich’in Nation in North America, and Lisa Fischer, an African American Grammy Winning vocalist (Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, Red Thunder).

The rockumentary film will travel the film festival circuit before premiering on major national and international television and cable networks. Both music videos will be submitted to MTV, CNN, BBC, and SABC television and cable networks, as well as other national and international networks and media.

The American Indian Law Alliance, an NGO in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, and The Seventh Generation Fund For Indian Development are assisting Mr. Romero and NCS with this project.

With rare performances outside of Indian Country interspersed throughout his career, from the Roxy Theater in Hollywood to Berlin’s renowned Komische Oper opera house, Robby Romero continues to stand up and celebrate what he believes in. It is the reason he has been honored and supported around the world by Indigenous leaders, politicians, celebrities, fellow artists, friends and fans. Weaving the new into the old, it is just the beginning....
