Please let me take a moment to introduce to you the newest Christian pop/rock band from the Pacific Northwest, Idlefill, whose music has been compared to Counting Crows, Matchbox Twenty, and Simon and Garfunkle. Please spend a few minutes and click the links to the left to sample some tracks from Idlefill''s new release, "What Matters To You." You may notice the many influences ranging from the Beatles to Larry Norman or you may find that their sound is in fact not like anything else. If you care to read on I will explain the motivation behind Idlefill, as well as what they hope to accomplish.
The formula is simple. A guitar, a bass, a solid backbeat, and big vocals. Chris, Andrew & Matt have been perfecting the delicate task of combining the roots of rock ''n roll, warm and inviting harmonies, and a catchy pop twist that truly makes Idlefill something for everyone.
The reason goes a little deeper. As much as Idlefill''s music is catchy, they want it to mean something. If music is to last for generations, it must have a purpose. For Idlefill, that purpose is spiritual in nature. Idlefill''s Christian faith has really been the reason that they''ve stayed together. As people, their relationships are rooted in Jesus Christ. Having been blessed with these talents and great songs, they thought to themselves, "what better way to share with others about our faith". In reading this and then listening to the music you might ask yourself, "where''s all the ''God talk''" or, "where''s the ''holy, holy, holy''"? Idlefill is not a traditional Christian rock band. They take their approach from a totally different level.
When Contemporary Christian music got started it was new, and never heard of before. Christian rock was cutting edge and the appeal lied in it''s almost "taboo" presentation. How can the "devil''s music" be used to sing about Christ. Over the years, it''s been shown that it is possible. Artists such as Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Phil Keaggy, and DC Talk just to name a few have taken Christian music to heights that weren''t thought to be plausible. One gap still remains. While Christian music is vastly popular and does it''s own good at spreading Jesus'' message around, many times it is aimed at Christians. Idlefill believes that Christian music isn''t primarily for the Christians. If the purpose of "Jesus music" is to tell those who don''t know Jesus about Him, then the music should be focused towards those who don''t know Him. On the same token, it must be in a language that they understand. Someone who doesn''t know Christ is probably not going to walk around saying "holy, holy, holy". What that person will talk about and know about is life and that''s where Idlefill is coming from. They write songs about life. The songs are love songs, fun songs, introspective songs, etc. Idlefill then takes life and says, "Here''s how Jesus applies in this situation" or, "here''s why Jesus is applicable here". This is certainly a tall order and it would be even for most established Christian artists, but none-the-less it is possible. Idlefill wants to use their talents and abilities to share Christ with as many people as possible. It is important that Christians be encouraged, taught, and even convicted thru Christian music, that''s how we grow as believers and Idlefill in no way wants to alienate the body of Christ. Instead, they want to extend the arms of the body of Christ and invite all who are willing to come to know Jesus so that they too may have life eternal.
