The story of Joseph (Peace be upon him) exemplifies how honesty, excellence of character, and perseverance are the way to succeed in life and triumph over adversity.
Surat Yusuf is the twelfth surah (chapter) of the Quran, revealed to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Mecca. It is about the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob, a descendent of Abraham.
Careful analysis of the Quranic text reveals that the story took place during the rein of the Hyksos, who drove the Egyptians south and formed a kingdom in the Nile Delta between 1800-1600 B.C.
Joseph''s ten brothers plotted against him and he was sold into slavery in Egypt. His new owner was an important dignitary. While he was an honorable man, his wife (unbeknownst to him) had carnal desires for Joseph.
Joseph''s resistance to her advances brought him hardship and imprisonment, but he retained his strength of character even in prison. He also interpreted the dreams of his fellow prisoners, most notably one who was later released and went to serve as the King''s cup-bearer.
The King had a vision, which Joseph (through the cup-bearer) got an opportunity to explain. Through his service to the King his name was cleared, and was appointed wazir (prime minister) by the King.
Later, during a famine, his brothers came to Egypt and he treated them kindly. He arranged to have his brother, Benjamin, brought to him. He did all this without revealing his true identity. When the brothers came to see him for the third time, Joseph then confronted them with their misdeeds and forgave them. Eventually, the whole family settled in Egypt and all was well.
Imam Arafi is a winner of several international awards for Quranic recitation.
