Details:
MISS EMILY BROWN invites you to disappear into the hush of her creation. Using autoharp, guitar, pianet and music boxes, she creates an intricate fog for verse to lose its way. Lyrics read like notes dropped on the sidewalk, letters from a cowgirl, entries from a grandmother’s diary. These haunting, minimalist compositions will make you forget that you have heard everything before.

Miss Brown’s equally weighted background in folk and jazz, combined with her enthusiasm for electronic music and improvisation, give her performances a notably innovative quality. As part of a diverse arts community from across Canada, she is often joined by her talented friends on cello, fiddle, electronics, upright bass or slide guitar.
Miss Emily Brown''s recordings range from unprocessed, live-off-the-floor tracks such as Moose Along the Tree Llne or Break to electronic montage pieces like Rainbows, Djs and Paper Moon. Admirers are enjoing her first full-length album, Part of You Pours Out of Me, released April 2008.

Along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, in her hometown of Iroquois, Ontario, Emily began skipping school in tenth grade to write songs. She ventured to Victoria, BC, in 2002, to study poetry, then began performing folk-pop shows with local bands. After independently releasing her first album in 2004, Miss Brown relocated to Nelson, BC, where she became a resident singer at the Baker Street Live Jazz Club. She released two more independent albums in 2005 and 2006, while studying vocal jazz composition at Selkirk College.

Relocating to Vancouver in 2006, she collaborated with Hey Ocean! and Mellow Black, and began touring as a guest vocalist with Victoria''s Karmetik Underground. The K.U. appeared at Victoria JazzFest 2007, and on the Knowledge Network for their achievements in music technology. Building momentum, Miss Brown performed at this year''s Artswells Festival (Wells, BC), Duotone Arts Festival (Kelowna, BC) and was a headlining act for the Robson Valley Music Festival (Dunster, BC). "She''s a Ghost in the House," from her recent live demo, produced and engineered by Jeremy Fisher, was featured as CBC Radio 3''s Halloween Track of the Day.

PRAISE FOR MISS EMILY BROWN

“Emily is a star on the rise. She is unique, she is confident, and anyone who had the honour of hearing her this year would agree that she weaves a spell.”

- Shara Gustafson, Artistic Director, Robson Valley Music Festival

“A hidden jewel of Canada''s indie music scene, Miss Emily Brown''s creative compositions are at the same time riveting and mesmerizing.”

- Ruthie Sumiko Tabata, Artswells Festival Co-Director

“Miss Emily Brown''s "She''s a Ghost in the House" harkens back to an almost medieval sound, best suited to a harpsichord or dulcimer. It is inherently creepy, too. Add Miss Emily Brown''s lilting voice to the mix, and even my cynical heart skips a beat.”

- Craig Norris, CBC Radio 3
