Details:
Clare Hines and Pete Coleman were 2 members of the now defunct French Dance Music Group ~ Dulzaina, and now as Metheglin, they play a more concert based repertoire of original compositions on Hurdy-Gurdy and English Bagpipes, sometimes featuring samples/percussion and noises! They have now been joined by the fabulous Mike Gulston on Octave Mandola and Acoustic Guitar.

The music is progressive folk music ~ a blend of dance, contemporary and experimental sounds and rhythms. Metheglin hope to bring the sounds of the bizarre, medieval instruments they play to a wider, modern audience. So be prepared for music unlike anything you have ever heard before from their new album "Raining in Paradise".

"An Absolutely Brilliant Debut Album" ~ Frank Hennessy - BBC Radio Wales

"Oh, super stuff! Really lovely" ~ Genevieve Tudor - "Sunday Folk" BBC Radio Shropshire
"A Very Talented Duo" ~ Johnny Coppin BBC Radio Gloucester

The English bagpipes are Jon Swayne "G" and "D" pipes.... the gurdies are both French - Denis Siorat electro-acoustic and a traditional lute backed Boudet.

About the name Metheglin:

Metheglin is type of mead drink - along with Melomel, Cyser, Hydromel, Pyment and probably others too. In French Melomel is known as Chouchenn. Anyone who has been involved in the French dance scene in the UK for any length of time will recognise at least two of these as band names - and we decided to go with the trend!
The name Metheglin has a further significance, it is derived from the Welsh word meddyglyn, meaning "medicinal liquor" but was a very common Cornish mead. Until recently, Pete lived in Wales and Clare lived for many years in Cornwall - so the name brings these two influences together.

Pete is also one of the country''s leading engineer/producers of rock music, having worked with bands like AC/DC, Paradise Lost, etc in his long industrious career!

“Raining in Paradise” is the debut album of a band with a very distinctive sound and a very different type of line-up. The album was recorded and produced by Pete “peewee” Coleman – more usually noted for his work with bands such as AC/DC, The Charlatans and Echo and the Bunnymen - on his new label Pipe-Dream Music.

Metheglin play contemporary progressive folk on modern versions of medieval instruments. The music could be termed “experimental”, and is a melodic blend of modern, medieval and dance, all underpinned with exciting percussion, driving bass lines and exotic instrumentation.

Metheglin is a trio consisting of : Pete Coleman - English Border Pipes; Clare Hines – Electro-acoustic Hurdy-Gurdy; Mike Gulston - Acoustic Guitar / Octave Mandola. They have been joined by some very special guests on this their debut album including: Jon Swayne (Blowzabella) and Dan Wolverson (Cyser /Boldwood) amongst others.

Clare and Pete recently played live to 5 million listeners on BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans’ “Drive-time Show” as part of his “endangered instruments” week.

The album packs a wide dynamic breadth of music within its 16 tracks, you never know what’s coming next... slow orchestral to frenetic trance, and yet it delivers the solely unique sound that is Metheglin. So be prepared for music unlike anything you have ever heard before!

Metheglin are now working on setting up a festival and gig tour for 2009. Gigs to date have included: The first Annual Hurdy-Gurdy Festival, Lancaster; Kinnersley Castle EMADE Festivals; Stroud Fringe Festival; Fal-Bal Falmouth; Les Pannards Festival, Otley... but the band say “We have just been so busy completing the album, we haven’t had time to go out on the road yet. This will all change for 2009!”

Radio airplay since the demo release has included BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Shropshire, BBC Radio Cornwall, BBC Radio Gloucester and Stroud FM.
