Mykie C is a genuine all-rounder. His history as a recording artist, producer and engineer is long and distinguished. His passion may be found in the complex rhythms of his much-loved bass, but he is also a fine guitarist and an original and resonant singer and lyricist.
This native New Yorker is just at home in the guise of hip-hop producer as he is strumming his six-string as a singer-songwriter. However, it is the buzz of performing that really gets Mykie’s juices flowing, and that is what inspired him to hit the road to promote his new album, The Lost Dreams, with his band The Positions.
The new record sees Mykie take on a slightly different genre to anything he’s tried before – pop rock. Like the man himself says, he’d heard enough of it on the radio to think he could it himself. But just as before, these infectious new songs are truly do-it-yourself jobs.
Mykie may have pulled together the new five-piece to go on tour this fall, but The Lost Dreams was written, arranged, composed, produced and nearly entirely all played by the man himself. He even owns the record label – Sunken Moon Productions.
As you might imagine with something so personal, this is a record that does not compromise its sound. Mykie may well have decided to take a different route in terms of his style, the tunes have the same pop sensibilities that Mykie has always had.
As he describes it, these are songs that are “pop, in a sense, but different from anything heard anywhere before.” What does this mean? It means heartfelt lyrics, real musicianship and a good groove.
You can hear both his originality, and the influence of the likes of U2, The Police and Matchbox 20 in songs such as ‘Only With Dreams’ and ‘Fallen Star’, while the harder edge of Mykie’s sound can be heard in ‘Killing Yourself’ and ‘Tattoos’.
But, as you might expect from a master of bass, these songs are shot through with a real feel for rhythm and an ear for what makes an infectious pop song. This is a record that should appeal to guitar fans who like a bit of heart to go with their riffs, and pop pickers who want music with some more depth to it.
The Lost Dreams is, over and above anything, a record destined to break Mykie C into the mainstream – a place where his talent deserves to be heard.
