MP3 In A Cage - POP: 70's Pop

Original, ecletic Pop/Rock in a ''70''s sort of way, from quasi-prog/rock through a trip to the renaissance faire, 60''s psychodelia to pure power pop and many stops in between

11 MP3 Songs
POP: 70''s Pop, ROCK: 80''s Rock

Details:
In A Cage was conceived as a way to produce music that emulated my favorite ''70''s albums. Mostly in attitude and the eclectic nature of bands such as City Boy, Queen, 10cc and Brian Protheroe. The "blue-print" would have to be Sheet Music (10cc), Sheer Heart Attack (Queen) or Young Men Gone West (City Boy). While the songs lack the performance and production excellence of these bands, it was the starting point and the "goal" to get as close as possible.

This premise mostly succeeded in letting me just "please" myself, as far as arrangements go. I just did whatever I felt that I would like to hear from a band doing these songs. I''m not sure if that makes any sense... but, in the end, the songs have mostly an 80''s and 70''s type feel, filtered through my love of 60''s music (mostly Beach Boys and Beatles here). There is pretty much nothing that has a "modern" feel (mostly intentionally). People that reviewed several of the songs seemed to often name David Bowie and Pink Floyd as influences - which is true, but I hadn''t thought of any of these songs in that light!

I''d like to think that each song has thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics. In any case, a lot of time was spent on them.

In the end result - I''m looking for those few people out there that like variety in their music. I doubt anyone (but me) will like every In A Cage song, but, at the risk of sounding over-confident, it certainly is a niche that no one else is filling (and no one probably wants to!)...

So here it is - from quasi-prog/rock through a trip to the renaissance faire, 60''s psychodelia to pure power pop and many stops in between... In A Cage (the mid-70''s album that was never released until 2004?).

The songs:

1. FALL ON YOUR KNEES

Somewhat of "prog" style arrangement

Borrows liberally from City Boy, especially in the "Cigarettes" type solo''s

Lyrically, it is sort of an "end-of-the-world" scenario

The arrangement gets sort of thick in the choruses, but I really wanted a very multi-part chorus

I also tried for City Boy-esque interplay between the lead vocal and back-up vox through the verses

The first minute is more or less a prelude built on a theme from the chorus

2. CLOSER TO THE HEART

A Floyd-esque ballad? This is a much more laid-back arrangement

Lyrics and style is basically a nod to Brian Protheroe

A much more guitar oriented tune with a fretless bass adding to the interplay

3. SILENT SERENADE

Very much 80''s style pop/rock, a nod to City Boy in the pre-chorus and the Beach Boys in the chorus

The lyrics are heavily influenced by Lol Mason (City Boy)

This tune is the only thing not to be re-mixed numerous times - I could never get the original feel again

4. MAN OR MACHINE

From a S/T concept album I plan on working on in the future

This is my try for a Queensryche type of song

I originally thought of dropping this song from the album - but after tinkering with it, it has become one of my personal favorites

The interlude is a mishmash of baby crying and machine noises, hopefully imitating the theme of the song. One of my favorite parts was morphing the baby''s scream into my own just before the mini guitar solo

5. RAINBOW LAKE OF THE NORTH

Inspired by Brian Protheroe

A trip to the Renaissance Faire, guitar/flute/vocal arrangement

There''s many odd time signatures in the music

Lyrics are based on a Minlow poem

I was shooting for a live sort of feel to this recording

6. THEY CAME

Pretty much the only straight rocker

I went with the idea of group vocals instead of one main lead vocal

7. SO IT GOES

One of my personal favorites, because it got about as close to my goal with the soft/hard arrangement, maybe power/pop would come closest to describe it

Lyrics are about the "enigma that is woman"

I might have eventually gotten too "thick" with the arrangement...

It''s sort of odd that there ended up being only a few back-up vocals

8. PERFECT FOR PLEASURE

From the Man or Machine concept album also

I threw in a Beach Boys style bridge mostly because it just seemed like an odd thing to do

The ending became a pretty thick cacophony but it seemed to fit

9. THIS HOLLOW SOUVENIR

Maybe the closest to something resembling a "modern" sort of tune, still some 80''s flourishes here and there

Probably the most personal lyrics on the album - getting older and reflecting on what you''ve accomplished (or not)...

10. BOURNE TO FREEDOM

A bouncy little ditty, a release from the seriousness of "This Hollow Souvenir"

Another one taken from a Minlow poem

Goofy commentary at the end by Lord Riphel (a noted Minlow expert?)

11. DEAR WORLD

A fun way to end the album - sort of 70''s Glam meets 60''s Flower Power...

Big multi-layered arrangement

really many little sections strung together to give it that "era" feel
