Recorded in Canada, “Invented Reality”, is Jasna Jovicevic’s released debut album.
Jasna plays alto and soprano saxophone, but also sings and, on a few melodies, exposes her roots by drawing on The “Balkan sound” with the tender voice of the Serbian wooden flute.
Jasna is honoured to have collaborated with fantastic Canadian and International musicians on this project including, the passionate sounds of pianist Robi Botos, soulful, electric bassist, Rich Brown, tasteful upright bassist, Mike Downes, violin virtuoso, Aleksandar Gaic, modern jazz vocalist, Yvette Tollar and many others.
Largely based on Jasna’s traditional Balkan roots, the album consists of 12 original compositions that easily blend a lush string section, contemporary jazz and free improvisation. This fusion is rhythmically rich, but at the same time wildly lyrical and melodic. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this album is the band’s seamless play and interaction despite their diverse musical backgrounds and varying cultures.
Jovicevic’s album’s theme is best expressed in the title track, “Invented Reality”. The composition is a reflection on the emotional and spiritual awakening that consciousness and curiosity have made possible throughout her life’s journey. The lyrics speak of the struggle to detach from the ego. It is about constant change, the elimination of false hope, and an awakening from the illusory reality.
This theme is echoed in tracks 4 through 7 in the Suite called “The Journey”. This four--part suite’s concept has more of an internal and personal importance and reflects a path the composer took a few years ago which she is now ready to acknowledge and declare through her music. It is a story about the process of awakening. The Journey Suite differs from the other compositions on the album because it is written for the string section, in combination with saxophones, wooden flute or voice. There is neither piano nor are there drums, so it is naturally less oriented toward rhythm. Some movements are strongly tonal, straightforwardly lovely, and sentimental in character, while others are atonal, abstract, and sarcastic.
The rest of Jasna’s pieces were written for jazz quartet, but are sometimes enriched with strings as well. Throughout the album the brilliant supporting musicians get ample opportunity to contribute with their virtuosic improvised solos.
Jasna’s music is modern jazz. At the same time it is melodic cross-over music that is easy to listen to, in spite of the odd rhythms of the Balkans.
The album “Invented Reality” will be promoted in Canada, USA, and Europe. Jasna is already organizing Canadian and European Tours with the original band from the album for the 2009 Spring-Summer festival season.
Jasna Jovicevic is an alto and soprano saxophone and flute player and composer from Serbia.
She received her BA in jazz saxophone from Franc Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, and her MA in composition from York University in Toronto. She has also studied music in Serbia, Brazil, USA and Austria.
Jasna has performed her work around Europe, USA and Canada at various national and international festivals.
Jovicevic received 1st prize at the International Ethno Music Competition in Milan, Italy, 2nd prize at the International Balkan Art Festival- Ljubljana, Slovenia and the 3rd prize at the Contest for Best Jazz Composition organized by the Hungarian Jazz Federation.
She was chosen to represent Serbia & Montenegro at the XII European Biennial of Young Artists in 2005 and later received scholarships to participate in Artist In Residence programs in New York City, San Francisco, Ghent (NY) and Canada’s, The Banff Centre For The Arts.
Jasna has had opportunities to play with such artists as Billy Harper, Mike Murley, David Mott, Chico Freeman, Al Di Meola,Ray Anderson, Dave Young, Edgar Mayer, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Aronoff, Benny Powll, Szakcsi Lakatos Bela, Olah Kalman and many others.
Rich Brown- bass is of the most in demand musicians in Toronto, and has been an active member of Toronto''s culturally diverse music scene since 1992. He is currently a member of the JUNO nominated indo-jazz group autorickshaw and has performed and recorded with some of the finest musicians in the world including jazz vocalist Carol Welsman, Jane Siberry, Glenn Lewis, Dapp Theory, Steve Coleman & 5 Elements, James "Blood" Ulmer, Andy Narrell and Bruce Cockburn to name a few. Rich is currently at work on a new solo project called rinsethealgorithm and has appeared on over 40 recordings ranging from Jazz to Funk to Latin to traditional Asian and Arabic music.
Robi Botos- piano was born in a musical Romani (Gypsy) family in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary. Since immigrating to Canada in 1998, Robi has made great contributions to Canada''s jazz scene ( Pat Labarbera, Marcus Belgrave, Terri Lyne Carrington, James Blood Ulmer, Archie Alleyne, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Young, Joey DeFrancesco, Michael Brecker, Toots Thielemans, Guido Basso, Avishai Cohen, and Richard Bona to name a few ). He won 1996 First prize at the Budapest AORTA national jazz band competition. 1998 Best Soloist at the Hungarian Radio''s international jazz piano competition. 2004 First and public prize at the international Montreux Jazz Festival''s solo piano competition. 2005 Best soloist prize at the international Jazz Hoeilaart competition in Belgium. 2005 Official IAJE (International association for jazz education) award in Long Beach, California. 2006 2006 3rd prize at the Martial Solal Piano Competition in Paris France. National Jazz Award for keyboardist of the year 2007. First price winner at the “ Great American Jazz Piano Competition” at Jacksonville in Florida 2008.
Anthony Michelli- drums (Hamilton) is a graduate of Mohawk College, has studied at the Banff Center and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and has a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto specializing in Jazz Performance. He is now on staff at York University and Mohawk College Jazz Studies Programs. He has received the 2003 Grand Prix de Jazz General Motors-Festival International de Jazz de Montreal Award (Nancy Walker Quartet). Anthony currently leads his own groups, the Anthony Michelli Trio (Adrean Faruggia - Piano and Jon Maharaj - bass) and Anthony Michelli "Bass-less" Trio(Geoff Young - Guitar and Perry White - Sax). He is also a member of the collective bands, The Anglo-Canadian Project and the Filice, Tucci, Ray, Michelli Group Anthony continues to sustain a very active international teaching, recording and performance career supporting and collaborating with a vast number of distinguished composers and performers.
