The Independent Music Awards has selected Jackie Frost''s Calliope as one of five finalists for 2006 Best Americana Album. In addition, "Away We Go," a track on the CD, was selected as a finalist in the Best Americana Song category.
The Jackie Frost Trio (JFT) is a dynamic Richmond, VA based musical ensemble. JFT members are Jackie Frost (lead vocal, acoustic guitar), Danny Hughes (acoustic guitar, vocals), and Richard Ward (banjo, vocals). The JFT has worked together in the Richmond area for over ten years. Their vocal arrangements and acoustic adaptations of popular, but not mainstream cover tunes, and their provocative original material have made them a local area favorite.
The JFT performs infrequently at coffee houses, private parties, and local concert halls. They prefer to limit their show dates to quiet concert type settings. They believe that the power and depth of their music can truly be enjoyed only in a conducive atmosphere, where the audience can experience every nuance and complexity on an individual basis.
The JFT recently had the prestigious honor of performing live with the Richmond Symphony, under the direction of Mark Russell Smith, at Richmond''s Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts. Page Wilson organized the event and hand selected the JFT for the performance, along with his own group "Reckless Abandon", and Terry Garland, a regionally famous blues artist. The event was simulcast on Public Radio WCVE 88.9 as the "Out o'' the Blue Orchestral Review". The event proved to be a high point in the musical life of the JFT.
Fans of all ages seem to enjoy the music of the JFT. Their music runs the gamut - from straight ahead delta blues, to jazz influenced improvisational standards, to bluegrass powered arrangements of easily recognizable covers, to original material that can only be heard at a JFT show. There truly is something for everyone, and no one leaves a show without feeling that they have been a part of living art. The crowds will often be heard singing along to their favorites, or shouting out their favorites to band members between songs, in hopes of getting to sing along.
The JFT rarely performs as a trio. The same enthusiasm that draws crowds from all walks of life seems to draw fellow musicians as well. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many of their musical contemporaries including such notable area musicians as Billy Lux (acoustic string bass and the best bass vocals ever), Daniel Clarke (piano and constant musical inspiration), Robby Sinclair (drum set), Curtis Fye (acoustic string bass), Malcolm Pulley (mandolin and fellow song writer), Chris Fuller (mandolin), and Ryan Hughitt (acoustic string bass). The JFT has also been a part of George Turman''s "Among Friends" concert series, which have played to sell out audiences in some of Richmond''s finest venues.
The JFT has had the honor of playing some of the most wonderful music stages in the area, including The Ashland Coffee and Tea Co., The Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts, The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, St. Catherine''s McVey Theater, The Virginia Commonwealth University''s Performing Arts Center (at which they recorded a live CD with the help of Bill McElroy of Slipped Disc Recording), and the University of Richmond''s Modlin Center for the Performing Arts.
The JFT''s third CD, Calliope, was released March 8, 2005. Grammy award winner, Bill McElroy, engineered it at his Slipped Disc Studio in Ashland, VA. Calliope contains all original material and has been a collaborative effort between writers Danny Hughes, Daniel Clarke, Malcolm Pulley, and Jackie Frost. Along with the JFT, many local musicians contributed to the project including Malcolm Pulley (mandolin), Daniel Clarke (piano and vocals), Billy Lux (acoustic bass), Curtis Fye (acoustic bass), and Robby Sinclair (percussion). Calliope song selections reflect the versatility and diverse musical interests of the JFT, from pop flavored ballads to bluegrass flavored up-tempo tunes. Local record stores may have a problem deciding which bin the Calliope belongs in, but their fans know to put them along side of their favorite recordings.

- ''Calliope'' by Jackie Frost is an acoustic rock CD with a country bluegrass feel. At times the songs sound like acoustic rock versions of Bonnie Raitt, but overall I hear a great acoustic, pop/rock trio. Jackie applies a jazz vocal style to the well written songs, played with a slightly country, bluegrass feel. The original songs are easily the type that I envision audiences really getting to know and memorize. Jackie Frost has a following in the Virginia area right now, but I expect them to have a much bigger following quite soon.

Jackie Frost: Calliope
This is a nice collection of laid-back acoustic jazzy folk in the vein of Norah Jones, although this leans more towards the folk part of folk/jazz. Frost''s ensemble mixes in some bluegrass and Texas swing, so that''s one distinction from Jones. Frost''s voice is not as smoky nor is her style as expressive as Jones, but if you are one of the millions who''ve bought Norah Jones, and you liked the direction Jones took on her second CD towards the folky and acoustic, then this CD is right up your alley.

Jackie frost with "Calliope" - our classical stream host George Persona drove over an hour to hand deliver this CD to me, and sat right here as we listened to it end to end! *ALL* tracks loaded into the permanent playlist here this week... crisp clear vocals, tasteful guitar, delightful lyrics. essential?
