Waylon Jennings once said "There''s always one more way to do something...and that''s your way." That is the spirit that defines independent music and that is why this album prominently boasts "Made in Texas" on the front cover. Jimmy made up his mind that he would do this his way and he did. He wrote the music, he picked the players and he made it all happen on a working man''s budget. And it''s no accident that the CD looks like a plain brown paper bag.
Texas is the capital of independently-produced music and the CD "Sinful Tunes" is a quintessential example of the type of cutting-edge music created by headstrong music pioneers such as Bob Wills and Willie Nelson. The compilation combines soulful writing, humorous views of life''s most delicate and painful subjects and a big helping of picking and grinning. "Sinful Tunes" covers the entire spectrum of American Roots music, from in-your-face bluegrass (Jimmy proudly calls it Slamgrass) to soulful southern country/rock.
James Mulliniks-Beavers is known by several names to his friends: Jim, Jimmy and James to name a few. The name "Mulliniks" was his mother''s maiden name. Her father, "James Emzie Mulliniks" was Jim''s first musical influence. He traveled throughout years singing with several gospel groups. Jimmy says through the elder Mulliniks he gained an early passion for music and a deep love for the rich, harmonic vocals of southern gospel. In tribute he now carries the Mulliniks name.
Jimmy is an accomplished writer, singer and picker. It is impossible to brand or categorize his music but then why should it need labeling. All songwriters cringe at the notion that someone might try and compare their music and Jim is no exception. He takes great pride in the notion that his music is different.
Jimmy began writing music in his early teens and continued until his son was born. Like many parents, he committed himself to being a Dad and put the guitar away. But in time it found its way out of the closet. Today his music is a palette of the colors of his life.
