After being a sideman for such notable New Orleans/Louisiana artists such as Mem Shannon, Buckwheat Zydeco, Michael Ward and Reward, Irene Sage, Monk Boudreaux and the Golden Eagles and others, local bassist Jimmy Ives has put together a super-tight 11-piece group with a driving horn section playing a blend of funk, acid jazz, R&B, and reggae inflected music. Named after the statue on Jimmy''s living room voodoo alter, the Friends of Jabu new CD entitled "First Offering" showcases all original material written and arranged by Jimmy and features some of New Orleans hottest local musicians including Jason Mingledorff (sax), Mark Mullins (trombone), Theryl deClouet (vocals), Charlie Denard (keys), Bert Cotton (guitar), and many others.
Whether it is the go-go inflected funk of the opening track, "From Ash, to Seed, to Flower," the soca-tinged "Mattie and Jack," the acid jazz of "I''ll Never Get By," the reggae induced "Gonna Give It Back," or the latin/brass band feel of the CD''s only instrumental "Flambeaux," this newest band on the New Orleans funky music scene delivers in a big way! All complimented by the sweet vocals and harmonies provided by the band''s three main vocalists Lloyd Martin, Rechelle Cook, and Natascha Bolden.
