Details:
Les Nubians meets Sade. Or maybe she''s Sting meets Prince. Jacqueline Hopkins IS jazzy pop. Does she do jazz-influenced pop, or pop-influenced jazz? Whatever genre you specify, one thing is clear: Jacqueline Hopkins is an artist whose work includes soulful lyrics, beautiful music, and sultry vocals. As a fan recently put it, her work is "not constrained to any one genre." Fans have compared her to everyone from the Talking Heads to Sade. As international soprano Shannon D. Hunt once put it, Jacqueline "combines lingering melodies, rich, complex rhythms, and innovative song forms to produce music that defies classification." Love Is mixes jazzy grooves with edgy pop, funk, hip hop, and a hint of soca. And in the tradition of Il Postino, Love Is also includes poetry and other spoken word selections related to love, passion, and romance.

Give it to someone you love, including yourself!

Recorded with some of the cream of New York''s jazz musicians on board-- including Hilliard "Hill" Greene, musical director and bassist for Jimmy Scott and the Jazz Expressions; Elise Wood, flutist for the John Hicks/Elise Wood Sextet; Dennis Winge, director and guitarist of the Dennis Winge Trio; and Neville L''Green, bassist for the blues group Cadillac Moon--Love Is boldly declares the new genre of jazzy pop.

Since her 2001 solo debut, Jacqueline Hopkins has been steadily building a reputation and a following in a crowded musical landscape. Her songwriting and arranging are far beyond her formal training, which she is the first to admit has not been extensive. She first started composing on an approximately 150-year-old antique player piano in her childhood home, at the age of nine, and she continues to compose on piano as well as guitar and drums. In addition to writing all the song lyrics and poetry on Love Is, as well as composing and arranging all the music, Jacqueline plays piano, various percussion, and bass on the album.

International jazz bassist extraordinaire Hilliard "Hill" Greene commented on her 2004 release Love Is that "each note and nuance is thought out and planned. As a result, it makes me want to give my full attention as a listener and player." He goes on to say that "Jacqueline has strong songwriting sensibilities." She has formally studied under conductor Paul F. Mueller, vocal instructor Bill Riley, bassist Hilliard "Hill" Greene, opera singer Shannon D. Hunt, jazz ensemble director Bruce Bonvissuto, and other music legends in New York City.

She has electrified audiences in both New York and Reykyavík, at diverse venues including Shakespeare''s Sister, Artland Bar, Pumpkins, the Continental, the C-Note, Sun Music Company, Izzybar, and Hús Málarans.

A portion from the sale of Love Is is donated every month to the Huntington''s Disease Society of America (HDSA), a national voluntary non-profit organization. For information about this disease or this organization, please visit https://www.tradebit.com.

Every selection on Love Is gives a glimpse into both the soul of the composer/poet, as well as the spirit of love itself. "Longing," with an irresistible rhythm that sounds like a locomotive, and a funk groove that is a nod to Prince, tells the true story of finally living out a long-hidden fantasy about revealing oneself in an intimate manner to a stranger on a train, who, for a fleeting moment fulfills an ardent desire to connect on an intensely emotional level. "Since We Met," which sounds like it is straight out of a Broadway musical or a very old romantic film, captures the unbridled, bounding joy of a brand new relationship that makes you want to skip and whistle down the street. "More True" is a brief excerpt from William Shakespeare''s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet in which Jacqueline is Juliet herself for the all-too brief period of fifty-five seconds. "That Chance" is a soaring ballad about dreaming that you have finally found your one true match, and deciding you will take a chance to see where your relationship will lead. "Intimacy" and "Come Lie Down," are soulmate dreamy jazz tunes that invite, entice, and caress you, body and soul, even as you share an interlude with someone very special, whether it is your partner or it is yourself. "Your Complexities," has an unmistakable hip hop feel, yet maintains the jazzy vibe, as it, inspired by an 8th century Japanese poem, "Komu to yú mo," shows how the more you understand your lover, however complex, the simpler your lover is to you as to no one else.

"Love Is" and "No Fear" are extremely powerful Biblical scriptures that fiercely declare the profundity of true, unwavering love that conquers, and never falters. "Penn Station, 9:01 p.m." and "End of Flight" are original poems that were inspired by a deep, all-enveloping love that is so pure, so strong, so beyond any other love, that you cannot imagine that you ever knew what love was until that moment that you finally felt this way about one soul who both gave you rest and robbed your sleep. "And I''m Ecstatic" harnesses, for just under five minutes, the passionate energy and anxiety that a stormy, intoxicating affair can bring. "Unthinkable" is a requiem and tribute to love lost in one of the most heartbreaking and final ways imaginable. "You Didn''t Know What That Meant" is a danceable soca number about love gone wrong. Finally, "I Don''t Know" is a fitting close to an invitation into the spirit of love.

With diverse inspirations and influences from Shakespeare to Neruda, from Björk to Handel, Jacqueline Hopkins'' Love Is is a feast for the senses that yields something new each and every time you listen to it.
