Jean has jammed and studied with some of the great vocalists of our time including Kitty Margolis, Kurt Elling, Madeline Eastman, Kevin Mahogany, and Mark Murphy. In addition to these great teachers, some of her largest influences have been Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Chet Baker, and Joni Mitchell.
Her voice is warm and silky, and can take on characteristics such as sexy, smoky, bell-like, rough, and "out there." Jean creates a variety of moods as she moves easily from a vulnerable intimacy to her distinctive quick wit and dry sense of humor. Whether it''s swing or sultry, ballads or bluesy, or even something you may have never heard, Jean Mazzei draws listeners into her world, who will be left with a song in their hearts and smiles on their faces.
Her debut CD, "At Last," has 12 cuts, 2 of which are originals called "If You''re Ready" and "I''ve Got No Right to Sing the Blues." Featuring Anton Schwartz on tenor sax, her arrangements are fresh, yet accessible. "My Foolish Heart" and "Alice in Wonderland" feature the Paul Nagel Trio, who are now touring with Boz Scaggs.
Jean has been singing and performing steadily in the greater San Francisco Bay Area since 1997. Before that she worked crowds up in Shasta and Siskiyou Counties, as well as crossing the border to Ashland, Oregon. She plays everything from dive bars to upscale clubs, receptions, and private parties. She has played and worked with top musicians such as Paul Nagel, Anton Schwartz, John Wiittala, Vince Lateano, Dan Feiszli, John Clark, Dean Riley, Jason Lewis, John Schifflett, and Grammy nominated Bud Spangler.
