Lev Friedman is a singer-songwriter from the Boston area. He plays a range of genres from folk and folk-rock to blues, pop and jazz. He and his wife, Joyce, and their three daughters are all musicians. The family plays together on occasion in various configurations. Breathing Still is his new CD.
In the late 70’s Lev taught finger-style guitar and songwriting in Cambridge at The Music Emporium. He created several incarnations of his own band, called the Larry Friedman Band, and gathered a small and loyal following. (He changed his name to Lev in 1980.) The bands played his originals, and generally consisted of acoustic and electric guitar with an upright bass and percussion. He played in various local venues including The Back Room at the Idler, The Springield Street Saloon and Club Passim. Raising a family and running his business took him out of the music scene, but he never stopped writing and continued to perform occasionally in small venues. After a hiatus of 25 years, he is back on the scene with his first CD, Breathing Still. When Lev is not working, you can find him recording others in his home studio, watering the garden, fixing the appliances, fooling around on the banjo (a new pursuit) and making time to write new songs.
Lev is the proprietor of Kolbo Fine Judaica in Brookline, Massachusetts. Kolbo has a strong national and international reputation as one of the best galleries of hand-made Judaica, selling the work of many artists from Israel and the United States. He is joined in the business by Joyce, and a great group of employees. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, stop by and say hello. The CD is available at the store as well. Lev is also the founder of B’nai Or of Boston, a Jewish Renewal community based in Newton.
