Details:
Split is Kevin Beale on drums, Stick, bass, keys and Greg Ewan on guitars, bass, keys and effects.

"Split" started with an idea that Kevin had to get together to jam and lay down some drum and guitar tracks. That''s really as much concept as there was at the time... no compositions, no direction, and no expectations - just winging it. We had done something similar with our good friends when we recorded the "Funambulist" sessions, but had never done it with drums. So we got together on Memorial Day weekend in 2002 and laid out the backbone of what would later become this record. I had a few guitar riffs that I brought with me (Hwy 12, 2073 Days) and I''m sure that Kevin had a few aces hidden up his sleeve, but the vast bulk of what was recorded was complete improvisation including the 17 minute track that would eventually become "Bigger Than All of Us" quite literally after adopting a wonderful bass line provided by Jeff Bunn.

We left that weekend with a disc''s worth of raw tracks comprised of single stereo tracks of drums and guitar. I remember thinking at the time that there seemed to be some significance to a lot of what had happened during the sessions and that some tracks like "Hatching Grand Schemes" seemed almost complete even after the initial recordings.

Over the course of the next few years, we re-convened a couple of times after the initial recordings and added some parts together and individually to some of the tracks, but progress was slow and without a lot of momentum until the summer of 2007 when we really began digging into the material with an intention to complete and release it. It was around this time I reworked a mess of a track that later became "Any Given Sunday" and Kevin completely reinvented the first 3 minutes of the song "Split". I remember that after I heard the stick solo in "Split", I really wanted us to dust off and finish the remainder of the tracks.

We completed the overdubs in the later part of 2007 and January 2008, many of which were first takes in keeping with the original spirit of the project. With the help of Scott Bell, we added washboard and vocals to "Chamberlain" and "2073 Days" respectively. Kevin had arranged for Jeff Bunn to record a bass part for "Bigger Than All of Us." To be quite honest, Kevin and I were both completely stumped over what to do with that track until we heard the bass line. How Jeff was able to make sense of it all still amazes me, but his contribution was the glue that pulled the whole thing together, and now at the end, this track comes off as a nice centerpiece not only to the record, but also to what this whole musical experiment was about.

We finished the mixing in January in Richmond. The tracks were later mastered by Jeff McManus at Rainmaker, except for "Hatching Grand Schemes" which was re-mixed by Bill McElroy at Slipped Disc in July. We''re very pleased with how everything turned out, particularly considering the manner in which the recording was done which left little or no room to fix "mistakes" from the original session. We hope that you''ll enjoy it too!
