Details:
Born from a bus, the youngest of four boys, Soleil spent his childhood in a rustic valley of Washington’s North Cascades. When the dissonant sounds of grunge swept the nation and interrupted even the laid-back temperament of the countryside, Soleil, armed with little more than some cassette tapes, a hand-me-down guitar and perhaps a flannel button-up, embarked to master the guitar. Luckily he lived in the Methow Valley during his early guitar spells, where the locals embrace the rhythm and the blues. If the image of young men playing the blues in their prime seems odd, just imagine a teenage boy playing lead guitar at the local brew pub on a school night. Later, while living in Seattle, Soleil meets the electronic duo Air via their break through album, Moon Safari. Instantly charmed, he unearthed his Moog, a thrift store score, and took up playing the Rhodes. Now you catch hints of his early blues guitar licks under the guise of these keyed instruments.

Soleil’s debut album, Abstraction, is a collaboration between his own eclectic youth and his later appreciation of electronic elements. In this solo album he composes, records and performs all instruments, including the guitar melodies, Moog hooks, trumpet salutes and harmonizes against his own voice. Be it ever so humble.

Think: Rusted metal. Recycled wood. Gingko trees in the autumn. Putting your nose in a bag of freshly ground espresso beans. The Pacific Ocean. Topographic maps of steep mountains. Seeing a picture of some obscure place in a magazine and saying, "Hey, I''ve been there!" Falling asleep on the long car ride home. That inexplicable impulse to jump off a cliff or tall building when you''re standing at the edge of it. Humming along to music in your head and wishing you could record it. Randomly assorted lists. Odometer palindromes. Bulgarian oregano. Homemade furniture. The brazil nut effect. The rhythmic clang of an express train passing by. Swimming holes in late September. Patterns formed by the spaces in paragraphs like this one when you blur your vision (What do you see?). DIY-multi-instrumental-improvisation.
