Jim Skinner''s music is a good example of what can happen when you let the lunatics run the asylum!
Jim is a talented multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter who has assimilated a broad palette of musical idioms throughout his life of incurable musical addiction. Primarily a stringed instrument specialist (acoustic, electric and square-neck Resophonic guitar, banjo, mandolin, electric and acoustic bass), he also shines as a keyboardist, harmonica player and has versatile vocal abilities. As a songwriter and arranger, he has an uncanny ability to combine facets of dissimilar musical genres into new and interesting (and sometimes slightly askew) song forms and directions. If you enjoy your Rock and Roll with a taste of Western Swing or would like to explore a bit of "Psychedelic Do-Whop Blues", Jim Skinner and his music are the place to start! Jim''s music is recorded at his home studio in Beautiful Rural Eastern Oklahoma (Westville) with Mr. Skinner presiding as the engineer and producer. Below is a synopsis of Jim Skinner''s "influences" and musical journey in his own words:
"I used to just listen to music, for the most part, starting in my very formative years (about 7 or 8) listening to the music enjoyed by my five-years-older sister (like I had a choice with it blaring from her room next door!). This was the era of the teenage crooners, or the "Bobbies", as I
called them - Bobby Vee, Bobby Vinton, Bobby Rydell, The Everly Brothers, Paul Anka, Neil Sadaka, etc. Soon thereafter, my tiny transistor radio gave me a heavy dose of the seminal Country And Western artists (Johnny Cash, Bob Wills, Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, Jimmy Dean, Tennessee Ernie Ford and George Jones) and Surf music. Later, I became steeped in the sounds of Motown and Stax recording artists like the Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Wilson Pickett, the Staples Singers and Aretha Franklin."
"As a pre-teen, I used to prefer watching Bluegrass on the Martha White Hour, the Stoneman Family Hour and the Porter Wagoner Show (OH! Dolly!) to Saturday Morning Cartoons. I then discovered the Beatles at 11, along with the Rolling Stones and the Animals (my Favorites) and investigated the Blues in a VERY strong way. I started playing guitar after hearing Muddy Waters and Albert King for the first time! I spent part of my 13th year in San Francisco in 1967 with my cousin who was a Jazz drummer, discovering the sounds of the Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks as well as the music of Van Morrison, Traffic and others at the concert halls there. I went on to learn mandolin, banjo, harmonica and various other instruments and fell in love with Progressive and Psychedelic rock!"
"From about the age of 15 until the present (some 35 years!) I have played in various Rock, Blues, Country, Western Swing and Bluegrass bands, often in bands that combined bits of several of the above!! I have often described my live music as "psychedelic front porch music" as I prefer to play in an intimate acoustic setting but employ the free-rolling song/set structures of the San Francisco Patriarchs, Jazz and Progressive rock. In the studio, I like to add the flavors of vintage analog synthesizers, Classic organs and electric guitar to add to the excitement!"
