THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC
It''s really all about the songs – sly slices of life written by all four band members. Bandleader Mike Starling''s bluesy reggae tune “Oh! Sandfly!,” for example, is a humorous narrative of his experience dealing with an insidious insect while on a backpacking trip in New Zealand. Guitarist Tom Plutshack weaves images of modern-day wage slavery and Egyptian mythology into the haunting grooves of "Pyramid Stones." And drummer Bob Mueller’s Latin surf-blues “El Chupacabra” relates the legend of a blood-sucking beast rumored to be terrorizing South America.
These kind of pop culture references and wry observations of world affairs are sprinkled liberally throughout the band''s lyrics.
“Bob and I met in college, where we were both mass media majors,” Starling explains. “When you look at the lyrics we''ve come up with over the years, it''s obvious that the journalist''s peculiar way of looking at the world has influenced our songwriting more than we would have ever guessed.”
A PERFECT THIRD
The third Bean Hoy CD, "Get Lost" expands on the lyrically and musically playful format that Starling established on the group’s first two releases, "Boys Can’t Be Trusted" (1998) and "Cool Music for a Big Dumb World" (2006).
Along with "Sandfly," the new disc includes three more new Starling originals (“Swing Your Hips,” “Shitty Job,” and “Crazy”) and a couple of droll ditties from bassist Jared Drake’s days with the Cottage Boys band (“The Planets,” “Daddy Long Legs”).
Rounding out the set is “California’s Gonna Sink,” a tongue-in-cheek earthquake anthem that Mueller and Starling originally wrote to land a gig for their first band, Your Missing Socks, back in 1984. Then as now, they express more amusement than annoyance with all the foibles of this big dumb world. The last verse from “California’s Gonna Sink” neatly sums things up:
What the hell, you only live once

INSIDER MUSICIAN STUFF...
• "Get Lost" is the first Bean Hoy CD to feature the current lineup of the band, which debuted at the North American Lightning Sailing Championship Opening Ceremony in Sheboygan in 2006.
• Original sessions recorded by Grammy Award-winning engineer Brett Huus.
• Bob, Tom and Jared first played together in the Milwaukee-based band the Lost Pioneers. The group released one self-titled album in 1999.
• Bob and Jared drafted Mike into their weekly club gig when he moved to Milwaukee in 2000. Often joined by a cast of rotating musical friends, the trio played every Tuesday night at the Y-Not II Tavern in Milwaukee for three years under the name Nucklehead.
• Bob''s solo project, "Dime Novel," was released in 2001 and is also sold at CD Baby.
• Bean Hoy debut album – including songs like "Road Construction" and "A Little Bit Confused (The Politically Correct Song)" – was named Best Local Recording of the Year in the La Crosse Area Music Awards. The original cassette version is out of print, but the best tracks plus several new songs were re-released in 1998 on the "Boys Can''t Be Trusted" CD (available from CD Baby, of course).
• "Cool Music for a Big Dumb World" (also available at CD Baby) features highlights of the demos Mike made between 1998 and 2006. Ranging from mellow acoustic tunes to fully produced blues-rock tracks, the CD offers excellent insights into his songwriting process.
• Besides the first two Bean Hoy CDs, two of Starling''s instrumental CDs – "Guitar Moods" (2006) and "Didjeriblue, Vol. 1" (2003) – are available at CD Baby. Tracks from "Didjeriblue" have been heard on numerous television shows on the Discovery Channel, A&E, Animal Planet, History Channel, Biography Channel, MTV and more.

Mike is also a professional photographer, so his camera is never too far from his side. He took a break during the initial "Get Lost" recording sessions to take some shots of the rest of the band members running through the tunes. The album cover shot is a close-up of Jared laying down a track on his upright bass. More shots from the session (plus a special pic of the soon-to-be-knocked-down Downer Avenue Garage) in the CD insert.
