ABOUT "DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS"... Jaspect’s third independent release titled, “Double Consciousness,” has been described by the band as a “more defined representation of the Jaspects sound,” by drummer Henry Conerway. “With this project, we wanted to break out of any box that anybody wanted to force us in,” James King explains. “We can’t be defined because we are constantly redefining ourselves.” Musical director T. Brown echoes King’s sentiment, “DC represents the steady maturation of the band as we become more in-sync with ourselves as writers, musicians, artists, and performers.”
The latter portion of Brown’s statement is important. Jaspects has always been a band that has been self-sufficient from a production standpoint. This time around, the band is showing its skill as performers with credits being distributed for rapping and singing. T. Brown steps away from his Fender Rhodes to add his lyrical touch to the band’s rendition of the standard “A Night in Tunisia,” simply titled, “Tunisia” (T. Brown). Brown uses a fluid, relaxed style reminiscent of a cross between Lil’ Wayne and Andre’ 3000 to tell the story of re-meeting someone he shared a fling with. The Memphis native is also featured vocally on “Please Step Up Your Game,” which reminds one of the late Roger Troutman, with Brown using a voice box to send a message to women from the men of Jaspects.
Perhaps the most surprising testament to Jaspects’ transcending the box metaphor is Jaye Price’s “Be-Hop,” where he and his horn-playing brethren each contribute a verse addressing the topics of hip-hop and jazz. Each horn specialist-turned-rapper represents their geographic roots by rhyming with distinct flows. King sounds like a 2007 version of Public Enemy front man Chuck D as Jaye Price exhibits his Goodie Mob-style delivery. Meanwhile, Dugger stays true to his New York upbringing with an admirable KRS-One-like message.
The aforementioned songs may stray a bit out of the lines that fans and critics have become accustomed to, however, the band continues to refine the straight-ahead jazz that made Jaspects’ first two albums shine. These album highlights include the Afro-Latin, Henry Conerway-produced “Chitlins & Chalupas,” Dwayne Dugger’s “Heaven Underground,” and “Uppity Negro” (James King).
CTE recording artist Scar is enlisted for the Delta blues track “Shawty Dead Wrong” (Jaye Price/T. Brown) and the band receives other help from Good Music recording artist Fonzworth Bentley (“Goodbye Love,” J. Sowells). Up-and-coming Atlanta R&B singer Tony Towerz (“You Got Me Funked Up,” T. Brown) and Atlanta songstress Sarah Stephens (“Inspiration,” produced by T. Brown) add their distinct touches to make “DC” a well-rounded project.
Double Consciousness is a point to the band’s position in music as being innately hip-hop by birth, but children of jazz. “We chose song names carefully to have universal meanings; one that will last for years,” Dugger said. The project weaves the listener in-and-out of the two genres further attempting to fuse both of the band’s passions for both hip-hop and jazz without compromise. As “Double Consciousness” showcases from the opening track “Revolution: The Encryption” (T. Brown) to the ending note of “Revelation: Nocturne in J-minor,” (D. Dugger) Jaspects’ goal is to turn musical expectations on its head and refine music as we know it is.
