Producer''s Notes

Tim Young is an engagingly eccentric New York City based singer-songwriter; and by New York I don''t mean Park Ave. Tim works his craft in NYC''s historic "Hell''s Kitchen", where he''s known as the "Rock n Roll Legend". After working with Tim on his latest album "The Cost", I can see why!

The songs on "The Cost" are truly unique, but seem somehow immediately familiar, as if you''ve recognized an old friend. Based more on emotion than on a vain quest for perfection, Tim''s songs speak to us through their honesty and unbridled passion.

In the tradition of Neil Young (no relation) or Lou Reed, Tim taps into a raw but vital energy that gives the songs real gravitas. Nothing artificial, nothing too fancy, but with an honesty that transcends virtuosity, Tim draws the listener in to hear the rest of the tale.

I met Tim through a mutual acquaintance in the winter of 2006. Actually, we didn''t meet at all until the start of production in March of 2007, but after many multi-hour telephone calls talking about what constitutes the "heart of a song" and a range of production concepts, I felt as though I had met him. I had heard several of Tim''s songs from his first two albums ("No Stranger" and "Red"), and was intrigued by their uninhibited presentation. Tim sent me a boatload of mp3''s, sketches of songs he''d like to incorporate into a new album. He had heard some of the work that Counter Clockwise Music had done, and it was clear that we had begun to develop a shared vision for his next production.

Then the coolest thing happened. You know how you might speak with someone over the phone, develop a rapport, but upon meeting them feel as if they were a complete stranger? With Tim, this did not happen. There was an immediate bond between the CCW production team, and The Tim Young Band. The bond was accelerated via a delightful Cabernet at a swanky Italian restaurant, where we had our first getting to know you chit-chat on the evening before the start of pre-production. We all had a blast, and the kinship that was ignited that night over an overpriced bottle (ok, several bottles) of wine made the production truly a team effort, like a bunch of old friends just working it out.

The Tim Young band consists of Tim on his Martin six string acoustic guitar, playing and singing with complete abandon, as if he was the only person in the universe, and Sand Edwards injecting those funky rock drum grooves straight into the heart of the action. Tim and Sand perform with just that lineup, and it works in the tightly packed clubby bars of Manhattan. But, for this album, Tim wanted a more orchestrated sound.

Enter journeyman session bassist Dave (Spider) Leeds. Dave is a CCW regular, and fit right in to the mix laying down exactly what the doctor (Tim) ordered. I had the honor of adding some electric guitar and keyboards to the project, and with Robert Becker capturing the sounds it was voila, instant band.

Since Tim and Sand could only stay in Detroit for a week this presented some challenges. We focused on getting their parts while they were here, and they trusted us to do the rest. Thankfully we live in the age of uploads and downloads, which is how we collaborated for several months.

We''d ship Tim a mix with an electric guitar or piano added, he''d comment, we''d tweak, he''d comment some more, we''d tweak some more, but eventually we''d reach consensus. It was challenging, but Tim was so cool through the entire process that we''d get together on Skype and talk 15 minutes about the record and 45 minutes about whatever. Now that''s a laid back artist!
Then, somewhere in the middle of all this Tim must have felt that we needed protein. He sent us frozen steaks, which were fantastic, and will never be forgotten - such a class act!

I wish to say on behalf of Counter Clockwise Music, that it was truly a pleasure and an honor to help Tim turn his vision into reality. Tim is a very talented songwriter and such a passionate performer, that it''s easy for me to imagine that his music will touch many very deeply. The songs will own a part of your imagination, even when you''re not listening to them. Thanks for working with us Tim!
