I''ve known Juan Diego''s guitar music for years: His technique and his sensitivity, his humility and his greatness, his dedication to his roots - Jerez is very Jerez - and his musical evolution toward paths less followed. Such paths let him express the "soniquete" of the land which injected it into his artistic blood - but also allow him to embark on his own track, far away from the coarseness, bad taste, and phony showiness, salted with tired and interminable staccatos which we''re now accustomed to from the self-styled group of flamenco guitar "stars" - most of whom don''t even know how to play properly.
Juan Diego is entirely another thing: He knows his art: His performances with such figures as Remedios Amaya, José Mercé, Antonio "El Pipa," Gerardo Nuñez, Joaquín Cortés, Marina Heredia, Carmen Linares, Antonio Canales, Miguel Poveda, et alia, explains how he can manage such fluency in both facets of flamenco guitar: That of accompanying singers and that of performing as a concert guitarist. Juan Diego, born in 1969, curently accompanies such top flamenco singers as Remedios Amaya, José Mercé and Moraíto, and Miguel Poveda, among others. He''s already at the top tier of flamenco guitarists. He has also played for the likes of Joaquín Cortés, Lola Greco, El Pipa, Antonio Canales, El Grilo, Juana Amaya, Merche Esmeralda, Gerardo Núñez, José Luis Montón, Carmen Linares, Sorderita, Duquende, Marina Heredia, Tomasito, Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent, Gil Goldstein, Pepe de Lucía, among others. "JUAN DIEGO''S "Luminaria" - A Distinctive Sound"
Listening to the nine songs of "Luminaria" takes us on a beautiful journey through elegance and sensitivity - presented to us in a curious, deliberate tempo. Juan Diego isn''t one of those guitarists who tends toward technical exhibitions of juggling acts on the guitar strings. He seems to prefer dedicating his ample artistic talent to music punctuated with poetic phrases, spiced with tonic accents and inflections. The constant lyricism that runs through the songs on "Luminaria" transport the listener to islets of tranquility, but never without the beat of the flamenco heart pulsing in the background.
The voyage through Juan Diego''s songs is also full of a rich variety of shades, timbres, and the voices that several guest artists contribute to this work. The incorporation of the sax of Jorge Pardo in the beginning Tanguillo, "Vapor de Caí," is like a suave navigation of the Bay of Cádiz when the sea is calm. And who better than Remedios Amaya to inject pure flamenco into the Romance, "Aires de Libertad," or into the Tango, "Dos Estrellas"? The Rondeña, which Juan Diego dedicates to his late grandfather, offers the lyric culmination of the recording, with a string quartet accompanying the reflecting forest spring which Juan Diego evokes with his guitar.
Then comes a happy Sevillana and a Soleá por Bulería in memory of the late singer Manuel Soler. The gravel voice of Diego Carrasco focuses the compás and sentiment of this Soleá. The last two songs bring the listener back to the brand "Jerezana" - the Bulería "Barrio" and a Siguiriya in which Luis Moneo reminds us how the Siguiriya can grab the listener when it''s sung right.
